Do audiobooks sync progress across devices?

I can't seem to find a definitive answer (but it all seems to point to 'no' but for some random websites). I listen to audiobooks on my iPhone primarily, but would like to be able to listen to them while on my iPad as well. I have all of my iCloud/iCloud Drive settings turned on for iBooks, I've imported my audiobooks via iTunes and sync'd to both devices, but that's where it stops. They don't sync my place in the audiobook from either side, and from what I can tell, there is no way to do so, but I'm hoping I'm just overlooking something.
