I phone 6 with ios 10.1.1 update shuts off when battery reaCHES 30% BATTERY LIFE. if plugged back in, the 30% returns and continues to work normally.

Try recalibrating your battery gauge:
- Charge to 100%
- Run the battery down until the phone shuts off
- If it shuts off above 1% charge it for a minute only, then continue running the battery down. Repeat until it makes it to 1% before shutting off
- Charge it to 100% again
If the battery is not defective this should fix it. If it doesn't take it to an Apple store and they can test the battery, and replace it if its capacity is below 80%. Free in warranty or AppleCare+, $79 otherwise. You can also get the app Battery Life and test it yourself.
