magic mouse left click problem

I'm having a problem with my magic mouse 2 when connected to my Retina MacBook Pro (2014). Sometimes on a web page (Safari or Chrome) I cannot get the mouse to left click. Instead, the mouse acts as though I right clicked and I can't get it to stop bringing up the context menu. The trackpad on the MBP works normally.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Band-aid on your finger pehaps?

Just this morning I started having a similar issue with my Magic Mouse on a Retina iMac (Sierra 10.12.2) where my left-click acted like a right-click—making the left-click unusable. I rebooted and that didn't help. I went to Apple forums and found this thread. I turned off the right-click function in mouse prefs and this restored the left-click, but of course there was no right-click function. I turned right-click back on, and it seemed to work for a bit but then it stopped again. I kept thinking “what has changed since last night when everything worked fine?" I then realized I had put a band-aid on my index finger before bed. I removed the band-aid and now all is well. Fortunately the cut on my finger wasn’t not too bad and I could remove it. It must have been conflicting with the touch sensitivity on the magic mouse.

Hello Normka,

A few questions and a request..

Please could you update your profile with its operating systems?

Then, have you had this problem only for a few days or so?

Have you recently updated or upgraded your OS?

Have you recently introduced a Wacom tablet or pen or other electronic item in the vicinity.

Take a look at this document about interference. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201542

Thank you for your response

Please could you update your profile with its operating systems?

The operating system is Sierra (10.12.1). I've updated my profile on all my devices.

Then, have you had this problem only for a few days or so?

It's been happening for a while -- at least since I installed Sierra and perhaps longer. I'm not sure but it has been 5 or 6 months. It wasn't a problem with Yosemite and not for the first part of El Capitan.

Have you recently updated or upgraded your OS?

Yes, to Sierra

Have you recently introduced a Wacom tablet or pen or other electronic item in the vicinity.

No. There are no active bluetooth devices (other than my mobile phone). The only powered electronic devices are a printer, 2nd computer, a wireless phone and a wifi speaker (not bluetooth). The speaker is new -- the problem existed before the speaker. The wireless phone base station has bluetooth but it is not detectable where my computer is.

You have got the option to ignore trackpad when mouse is present checked?

I'm not aware of that option and I don't think I would want to use it since I move my laptop around in the room. When on the desk, I like to use the mouse -- particularly if I go into the windows 7 side of the computer. When in my chair, I only use the embedded trackpad.

You say 'Sometimes'. How often is 'sometimes'?

When using a browser at the desk for more than a few minutes, lets say 10, the problem will occur. I thought the problem maybe was that I was careless in where I put my index finger but that hasn't proven to be the case. I did do a web search and found others have had this problem but they all seemed to be on older devices -- before the magic mouse.

The option to ignore the trackpad could well solve your problem. You may have to choose between altering your stance or accepting the nuisance. This option was put in to save peaople who use the mouse from accidentally brushing the track pad and causing just the sort of trouble you have.

Why not give it a go ... Go to systems preferences > Accessibility > and in the right hand panel you will see a check box opposite 'ignore trackpad etc'. Check that box then do some work at your desk. If all goes well, it is a minor adjustment to make when you go to your chair.
