Invisible "Documents" folder?

Hi All

I used to have a "Documents" folder in my home folder with a corresponding one in my dock and one day it just kind of disappeared before my very eyes. I figured that I would just create a new one. So I created a new folder, typed in the name "Documents", hit the Return key and got a dlog that said "The name “Documents” is already taken. Please choose a different name." I looked all over and it isn't there. And the "Documents" folder in the Dock is overshadowed with ?. Spotlight shows a "Documents" folder in the "Applications" folder which I figured I could have accidentally have moved it there (I've had some problems with folders sticking to my cursor and falling off in other places. Still trying to figure that one out.) and it also showed one in the iCloud drive. So I just dragged the one from the one in the "Applications" folder (It seemed to have the proper documents in it.) into my home folder figuring that I would be good and I got a dlog that read The item “Documents” can’t be replaced because it’s invisible.

Any ideas?

If you enabled Desktop & Documents in iCloud Drive, then your Documents folder is now in iCloud Drive. It actually still exists in your Home folder, hence the warnings you got trying to create a new one.

If you want your Documents stored locally, then disable Desktop & Documents in iCloud drive. Once deactivated, you will have to drag the contents of the respective folders out of iCloud Drive and back into your home folder Desktop and Documents folders.

You tried to create an alias of Documents folder , by the method :

Close all applications press : shift + command + N > rename it as Documents and clicked on enter , so it stated the name Documents already exists - so true .Choose other name .

The documents folder is having question mark , you can follow the article : macOS Sierra: If the Dock contains an icon with a question mark

Now , you accidentally moved Documents folder to the Application , then again tried to drag & drop it to Home folder , Definitely it will reject as in home folder , as you have your original Documents folder ( with original contents in it ) , two folders with the same name can not exist in Home folder .

So , the theme is invisible folder that was having question mark residing in the Dock . Just drag & drop this question mark folder in the centre of the desktop it will vanish or can press control key , click on the folder > option > Remove from the Dock .

Hi Barney, Thanks for the reply. To start out with, I didn't enable anything with iCloud drive, it just came that way. Originally, it came with a documents folder showing in my home folder. And that was in my iCloud drive. but somewhere along the line it got moved into the Applications folder. And now there is an invisible one in my home folder and I can't access it because it's invisible. It doesn't even show up in Save or Open dialogue boxes.

Well, you did. When the Startup Assistant ran, it asked if you wanted to enable Desktop & Documents in iCloud Drive and the option defaults to on. So, when you just clicked through and didn't read what it was asking, you enabled the feature.

I don't know how you got anything in your Applications folder. Perhaps dragging it there or otherwise. But, that is irrelevant.

Yes, there is an invisible Documents folder in your Home. That is the way the feature works as I explained before.

Stop trying to override it and just Disable Desktop & Documents in iCloud Drive via the iCloud System Preferences.

Once you do that, your Desktop and Documents folders will show up in your home folder.

Then, you drag the Desktop and Documents files out of iCloud Drive an back into your Desktop and Documents folders in your Home folder.

If you have a Documents folder in your Applications folder, drag those documents into your Documents folder in your Home.

Hi tygb. let me set this straight. No, I didn't try to create an alias of my "Documents" folder in my home folder. I tried to have the "Documents" folder that I should rightfully have in my home folder. I always did have one as far back as I've had a home folder.

I originally had a “Documents-iCloud” folder in my home folder. I didn't turn this on, it just came that way when I originally installed macOS Sierra. For some reason I’ve been having an issue with icons sticking to my cursor and moving with it for a short time and dropping of into a folder that I didn't intend to move it to and I didn't. set that up. The “Documents-iCloud” folder stuck to the cursor and I didn't see exactly where it dropped off but it didn't take long to find it in the “Applications” folder. I’m not really concerned about the “Documents” folder in the dock.

I turned “Documents and Desktop” off in iCloud and I still don't have a “Documents” folder in my home folder. And It still won’t let me create one. It seems to me that there shouldn't be an invisible “Documents” folder in my home folder but rather one that I can use.

Turning that off should have restored the Desktop and Documents folders. Try restarting and see if they are there when you log back in.

OK. I kept trying to turn off documents and desktop in iCloud over and over again and it wouldn't go. So I finally opted to turn off iCloud altogether. But I backed out at the last keystroke and I finally got it (And I think a few other things turned off that was unexpected.) turned off. But I still can't have a visible (aka usable) documents folder in my home folder and dock.

I'm not really an evil person, although quite often I don't eat my vegetables. I just want a documents folder that I can use.
