MacBook Pro 2016 - Very poor battery life

Hi,

I have had my new 13" MacBook Pro since one week and I am completely unsatisfied with battery life. I am not even remotely getting close to the advertised 10 hours at 75% brightness.

Right now, I have set my screen to 50% brightness while I am typing this in the browser. The machine basically is at idle with the TouchBar and keyboard illuminated just a bit (sitting in a dimly lit room). My battery is charged 95% and I am getting 5:00 hours remaining charge (so basically just 50% of advertised at even lower brightness).

I know that battery measurements usually take place under "ideal" conditions. However, this just seems to be a ridiculous mismatch between advertisement and reality. And we're not talking about some cheap laptop here, but a >$2000 machine. I don't want to imagine the situation in one or two years, when the battery will be down to 80% capacity and I will get maybe 3 hours at 100% brightness when sitting outside.

Anyone else experiencing this?

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2016, 4 TBT3), macOS Sierra (10.12)

Hi

I have a 13" 2016 MacBook Pro. On the suggestion of Apple Care level 2. I ran some data extracts at 100% battery, 50% then zero. 4 hours of battery life. I was using Safari, Listening to Apple iTunes streaming the radio, and looking at photos. Now I extracted information for Engineers at Apple to review. Waiting a couple of days for their solution.

I also may return for refund from B&H Photo if I do not hear back in time with there solution.

He mentioned Apple has this battery issue as the highest priority to get resolved.

Best Regards

the battery capacity for the new MacBook Pro 13 is 4889mAh, much less than the previous MacBook Pro, so I guess the Mac is more energy efficient when idle, but google chrome suck so much cpu power and drain the battery at rate of 17 watts, compare with idle 2-4 watts.

so I think maybe apple want to make a statement for google to fix chrome or they just don't care about battery life. It's really unacceptable for paying premium computer and still need to conserve every little juice out of the battery!!!

I've had my MBP 13 (TouchBar) for about two months now, and based on all the furor around battery life I wanted to wait until I had sufficient hands-on time with it to make my own determination. The truth is really simple: Apple put in a tiny battery (49.2 Wh) because they felt people wanted a thinner/lighter MacBook more than people wanted long battery life. There's nothing more to this story than that.

We can talk about software optimizations, Chrome vs. Safari, etc. all day long - but the reality is that there's no software tweak in the world that will make a tiny battery into a bigger one.

I am very upset that this machine I spent $2600 on has worse battery life than the past two laptops I've owned. I am trying to come to terms with that; the only thing that helps a LITTLE is that the battery is so pathetically small it charges fast, and that the USB-C ports give me charging options I didn't have before - I now carry a 10,000 mAH battery pack with me to top up the MacBook when needed (though I need to put the MacBook to sleep to get any actual charging).

Yeah the 13" with TouchBar has a 49.2 Wh battery vs. the 54.5 Wh battery on the non TouchBar 13" model. The 2015 13" models had a 74.9 Wh battery. The 15" TouchBar models have a 76 Wh battery. So depending on your build the 13" TB models will suffer from less battery life. So far my 15" model lasts from 9-10. Make sure your battery holds the maximum mah for 49.2 Wh under System information. If everything is ok and you're still not satisfied then you should exchange it for a different config or consider the 15" model. However both the 13" and 15" 2016 models have less battery life than the early and mid 2015 models. You have until Jan. 8 to decide what you want to do since the return/exchange period is extended from 14 days over the holidays. If this was a custom order you may have to ship it back since I don't think they accept custom order returns at physical Apple stores. Either way just call and ask them.

I have the same problem with my 13 MacBook Pro with touch bar. Roughly 5.5h of battery life on a full charge using only Safari and/or Word at 60% brightness. I hate to have to return the computer because it is so light and well built. It's wrong to falsely advertise 10h battery life while only delivering half.

In my system info, the following is listed: "

Full Charge Capacity (mAh):4477

Is this normal?

I am also victim of the dreaded battery drain on the new MBP with touch bar. I'm lucky if I get 4 hours on my 13" fully specced machine. I have ordered a replacement from apple which arrives next week.

Whilst waiting for the new one to arrive I have also been experiencing problems with my Time Machine backups failing. Whilst troubleshooting this with Apple over the phone, we discovered that my HDD is showing it's SMART Status as "Not Supported". This is obviously a fault. The support engineer susects that this is very likely the cause of the battery problems I'm experiecning as well. Might be worth checking if you are seeing a similar problem with your HDD (can be viewed in Disk Utility when focussing on the physical drive). I hope my replacement does not have this same issue!

4477 mAh seems just about right. I don't know the exact voltage of any of the batteries but using 10.95v in a calculator I get 49.02 Wh which is close to the official 49.2 Wh spec. Every single battery will have slightly different mAh, mV and Wh figures but they should all be within range. Honestly even though Skylake is much more energy efficient than Broadwell, Apple should have placed batteries with 75 Wh in the 13" models. It's crazy that the non TB 13" has 5 Wh more than the TB models which definitely consume more energy. I wouldn't call this "Battery-gate" but it is disappointing. Especially with a maxed out build there is no way to get near the advertised battery life. iPhones have suffered from low capacity batteries as well in sake of thinness. I think most of us would rather they be several mms thicker in order to get a solid 10 hrs doing work. I was thinking of exchanging my 15" for a faster build but I'm thinking it twice. The extra clock speed and GPU power (although Polaris is efficient) might not be worth the battery life tradeoff.
