some pkg install fails (after Sierra upgrade?)

Cannot install or update some commercial software (Toast 15 Pro among others) on my iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) with Sierra 10.12.1. Other applications update or install without any problems, as do the system updates and the few applications I have in the App Store. The issue could have begun after Sierra upgrade in September, but I am not sure.

Does it seem likely I can get system back to health with a full TimeMachine restore? Do you have any suggestions? Any suggestions would be appreciated... would like to avoid a full clean install with reinstalling all the apps and docs again...

I've run FirstAid on the system disk with Disk Utilities and just ran the latest TechTool Pro 9.0.2 on the system disk, including the Disk Permissions . Thanks in advance...

Here are examples of what I think are relevant portions of install logs. Since two of them happen moving files to destination, could there be some protection issue at some destination, or some cleanup that could be done?

1. Toast 15 cannot install, and when I had Toast 14 it could not upgrader to later version:

That 4396 release of Toast 15 had problems installing with Sierra. Get the later release toast_15_4486.dmg If you had earlier versions of Toast, they could get in the way.

From their tech support Please follow the procedure below to completely remove and reinstall Toast.

Quit Toast, trash the entire Toast 15 Titanium folder (located in Finder > Applications), then do the same for any previous versions of Toast, if you still have any installed. You need to remove all previous versions of Toast to avoid possible conflicts. Next is to check for the files listed below. If you see any of them, trash them:

"Roxio Toast Prefs"
“com.roxio.ScreenCapture.plist”
"com.roxio.toast.plist"
"com.roxio.Toast.LSSharedFileList.plist"
"com.roxio.MyDVD.plist"
"com.roxio.videoplayer.plist"
“com.roxio.videoplayer.LSSharedFileList.plist”
“com.corel.Toast-Audio-Assistant.plist”

You should be able to locate these files in ~/Library/Preferences. On the menubar at the top, click on "Go", and select "Go To Folder...". Type in "~/Library/Preferences", without the quotes. Locate the above files in the Preferences folder that comes up and delete them. You must use this procedure because this particular Library folder is hidden from view, and this is how to open hidden folders.

Once the procedure is complete, reboot your Mac, then re-install Toast 15.

All of those are third-party software. Contact their developers for assistance. If OS X is the problem or you think it is, then see the following:

Possible Fixes for El Capitan and Later Installations

You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.

  1. Resetting your Mac’s PRAM and NVRAM
  2. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
  3. Start the computer in Safe Mode, then restart normally. This is slower than a standard startup.
  4. Repair the disk by booting the from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volumeentry from the side list. Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and returnto the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
  5. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.
  6. Erase and Install OS X Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  1. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  2. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry) from the Device list.
  3. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's toolbar. A panel will drop down.
  4. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  5. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
  6. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  7. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continuebutton.

... just ran the latest TechTool Pro 9.0.2 on the system disk, including the Disk Permissions .

Don't do that. Disk Permissions will have been correctly set by installing macOS, and there will be no need to mess with them ever again. The effect of using non-Apple products to alter permissions is unknown.

I suggest you uninstall "TechTool Pro" and reinstall macOS. Back up your system before altering its file system.

Interesting, wonder where it was, as the next time I booted with command-R, the Sierra installer was there.

Clearly something got corrupted on my iMac. I am doing the clean install (your 6. erase and install) but restoring all that the installer allows from the Time Machine (all users with documents, applications, "Other files and folders", Computer and network settings,...) and if I still have the install issues I plan to try the erase/install with restoring just the user directories and re-installing all apps, /sw (fink) and the rest... thanks, jw1313

I was lucky and did not need to reinstall all my Applications and user accounts manually. What finally worked for me was:

  1. Erase and Install OS X from Mac OS Recovery (Kappy's number 6 following all seven substeps)
  2. Installer Restore all accounts and info from TimeMachine backup.

This means I left everything checked and was able to obtain all Applications, network settings, user accounts, etc.

Just a few applications needed to be re-installed, and those were the ones that had to be re-installed after full Time Machine restore (with format of HD) but that did not fix my issue. I had to obtain fresh system and the other info when prompted from the TimeMachine back. Good luck... hope you have good, recent TimeMachine backup.
