No Servers on Edit SMTP Mail Server List

New MacBook Pro with MacOS. I chose for Mail to automatically manage my email servers (Automatically manage connection settings in Mail on your Mac - Apple Support) but the past few days I have had problems sending email and Mail was complaining about the SMTP server I was using. So I decided to check the settings which I found at https://www.apple.com/support/mail-settings-lookup/ . I went into Mail preferences, choose the account in the accounts tab, and selected Server Settings. On the Outgoing Mail Server pulldown I selected Edit SMTP Server List but low and behold, there were no servers listed.

How do I check the settings?
