TimeMachine freezes when finished backing up

MacBook Pro Retina 15" Mid 2015 16GB, 500GB SSD, Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7

Sierra 10.12.1

The laptop freezes after completing TimeMachine backup. Sometimes the cursor will show up on a black screen, but a restart is the only thing that brings laptop back to life.

Also a restart has a two-stage boot all the time. By that I mean that the progress bars goes about one-quarter across, then the screen blanks out quickly and the progress bar then continues from about one-quarter until rebooting finishes. After deleting TimeMachine preferences, the initial backup ended with a crash and automatic reboot. But now freezes at end of TimeMachine backup. The laptop will freeze when unused for several hours just about all the time. If I turn off TimeMachine backups, laptop does not crash or freeze. I'm not positive the freeze happens at the end of a backup, but when I check the TimeMachine status in the menu bar after rebooting, the time shown is consistent with having completed a backup. For example, it might show last backup at 3:15 am when I check the laptop in the morning (after forced relaunch).

Not sure when this started, maybe a month ago.

Thing I've done:

1. Boot into Safe Mode

2. SMC Reset

3. PRAM Reset

4. Disk Utilities checks

5. Disconnected all peripheral

6. Reinstall of macOS

7. Deleted TimeMachine preferences-see comments

8. AHT check

Hi MtnBiker!

I see that your MacBook Pro is freezing after completing a Time Machine backup and while left unattended, and I'm happy to help. At this point, I would recommend creating a new user account on the Mac. You can then login to that user account, and attempt to back up using Time Machine. This will help us isolate this issue further to determine what's causing this.

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Cheers!

Try running this program in your normal account , then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

I've removed com.opendns.osx.DNSCryptMenuBar.plist, com.apple.aelwriter.plist, com.opendns.osx.DNSCryptConfigUpdater.plist, com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert-[...]@me.com-SharedServices.Agent.plist, com.fruux.client.plist and will relaunch and try again. Although it appears to me if they weren't doing anything since the apps had been removed or were non-functional.

Replying to self again. Getting rid of the daemons and other launch items seems to have fixed the problem. The laptop did a TimeMachine back-up early this morning with the cover closed. Still surprises me because all the errors were "executable not found," which seems pretty innocuous; but somehow in combination with TM finishing caused problems.

Thank you Eric and EtreCheck.
