Time Capsule is online... but not visible in Airport Utility?

This is weird. My home network consists of a cable modem connected to a Time Capsule (latest generation), and a slightly older Airport Express (1st generation N) in "Extend a network" mode.

Tonight, my PowerBook told me that it cannot find the backup disk on my Time Capsule. I can no longer see the Time Capsule under "Shared" in the Finder, and I cannot see the Time Capsule in the Airport Utility.

BUT... and here's the weird part... I am still online!

I can see the Airport Express in Airport Utility, and it shows that it is connected to the Internet, and I am definitely online using the network that is being provided by the Time Capsule through my cable modem. But I cannot see or connect to the Time Capsule in any way.

I've unplugged and restarted the Time Capsule several times, no change in behavior.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Very typical in Sierra.. is that what you are running??

There are several issues.. mostly AV software or security, cleanup and speedup apps.. get rid of all of them.

Otherwise I need more details.

What cable modem do you have? Make and model please.

Can you plug the computer directly into the TC by ethernet.. ??

If you have to use wireless.. turn off the Express so you connect directly to the TC.. there is a bug where if the computer doesn't connect directly to the TC it cannot see it..

Another method is to use the TC IP address.. if it is acting as router to the network and you set it to default .. ie didn't change IP, then it is 10.0.1.1 (you will see this if you open your wireless network on the computer and check the router address..)

In Airport Utility go to the top menu, file, configure other.. and type in the direct IP address.. it will then work.

For finder to use the TC.. use Go, Connect to server in the top menu again..

And type in AFP://10.0.1.1 which should then find the network resource and ask for the password.. remember to check it is included in the keychain.

No luck or find it hard to find out what is happening.. reset the TC to factory and start over.

Make sure the TC uses short names. No Spaces, no special characters.. pure alphanumerics.

Make sure it has a static IP address.. this is not an issue when the TC is router for the network.

Post a couple of screenshots of the setup .. after the factory reset and reconfigure..

Thanks for the response and info. Here are some more details:

Operating System: 10.12.1

Mac: 13" MacBook Pro (late 2016, USB-C) - one of the newest ones

Cable modem: Arris TM822 (Comcast Xfinity) - note that this is a telephony modem only, no router/wireless.

I am not running any special security, speedup, or other software (that I know of).

If I use the direct IP address method you suggest, I *can* connect to the TC from the Airport Utility, and all looks "normal" in the configuration. The Airport Utility app does not see the TC in the graphical display.

I tried the direct IP address method from the Finder (Connect to Server) and that did *not* work.

Some other notes:

Everything was working fine with this computer just the other day - no major software changes between when it worked and when it suddenly stopped working.

I am *also* unable to see this TC on my iPhone or iPad (both running iOS 10.1.1) running Airport Utility, and the same on my wife's older MacBook Air (also running Sierra).

I guess the good news is that the wireless network is still functioning, even if I can't see the TC in Airport Utility *or* use Time Machine.

I'm not able to try a factory reset on the TC right now, as I am about to leave town for a few days and don't want to inadvertently leave my family without network access. But I will consider trying that upon my return. (Will the factory reset also erase the TC hard drive?)

Thanks again.

I am having this problem but with a U-Verse Motorola Modem in passthrough mode connected to a TC, latest version. Everythign was fine, now I dont see the TC on my Windows airport utility but my other hardwired AE is visible on the airport utility. I am hardwired on my Win 10 machine to the TC and have internet functionality, but something is wrong with the WiFi on teh TC, almost like nothing is connected to it.

I cycled the TC and the UVerse modem/router (Motorola NVG589) turned the NVG589 back on first then the TC and it appeared on the Airport Utiliy application on the hardwired Windows machine and on my iMac and iOS devices, but 24 hours later, this AM, it is no longer there again.

I have read that placing the NVG589 in passthrough mode while also using the U-Verse phone service is bad news as a reported bug and I have experienced the poor experiences with call from my iOS device to my U-Verse landline.

What is strange is this all of a sudden just started so what give, why did something change all of a sudden? I mean it has been working for 5 years no issues with 2 different TCs and 2 different U-Verse Modems as I have upgraded them over those years. What happened?

do you have set back to my mac?

I was having this problem yesterday and could not use the printer due that it is offline. The green lights were on my Time Capsule and Airport Express and the old Airport Express, but only the old Airport Express was showing in Airport Utility. After a reset, the Extreme showed up again but disappeared after a few minutes. I was still connected to the Internet, and WIFI was working OK.

It looks to me as if Back to My Mac may be crashing Bonjour on the AirPort Extreme.

I'm now in my office and want to try this when I'm back home.

So, now I'm at home back from my office and I deleted on all three TC, AE and AE old version the back to my mac and it looks to works for me.

I can print again and I can see now all three in airport utility.

I'm sure that apple make some changes on their servers and this is causing the problems on our gadgets

try it and please place your comment

take care to all

the device is a Air Port Extreme - prior to 11/28 everything worked fine - I did fail to mention on 26th i added an external drive to the Air Port as a secondary back-up disk......no cable modem, tried to reset the Air Port Extreme to factory setting and after multiple attempts I was unable to return to factory settings - the device appears in finder....no AV software on mac, running McAfee for Mac - but TC worked prior to 11/28 with anti-virus running, no speed up apps - prior to the addition of the secondary hard drive the device has been working for a couple of years or so......

I am experiencing the same problem. I have two Time Capsules. They are both configured with passthrough and the cab le modem is handling the routing. The first Time Capsule (TC) disappeared around Dec 6 or 7, as this is the last Time Machine backup taken on that drive. I powered down all the cable modem and the two Time Capsules, then brought them back up: cable modem first, the first TC, then second TC. Both TCs shows in the Airport utility for about 3 or 4 minutes. Then the first TC disappeared again. I have not had "Back to My Mac" enabled on either of the TCs. The WiFi access point is still working, but as described, the drive is not accessible. I cannot get to the disappeared TC to attempt to reset it. Need advice. It's interesting that all seems to have happened around December 6 or 7, 2016.

Perform a hard reset on the base station and, then, using iOS (scroll to bottom of "Wi-Fi" menu in iOS Settings app to start the configuration on iOS) , reconfigure the base station as new (do not restore previous settings). this is the solution that eventually allowed me to get back all the AirDisk services and access the base station settings in Airport Utility.

I think my problem was indeed having "Back to My Mac" enabled, but not sounds like you're having another issue. I hope my suggested fix helps. Good luck.
