Is the Dell Ultra HD 4k Monitor P2715Q 27-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor compatible with my new MacBook Pro?

Hello,

I was thinking of purchasing a Dell Ultra HD 4k Monitor P2715Q 27-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor to use with my new 2016 Macbook Pro. I have the late 2016 with the 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 processor. I'm running MacOS Sierra 10.12.1.

From what i read on-line people are using these monitors with older MacBook Pros. I'm wondering if they will work with the new computers?

Thanks,

- Patrick

Assuming your model is MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016) - Technical Specifications, it has

Video Support

Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display at millions of colors and:

  • Up to two displays with 5120-by-2880 resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors
  • Up to four displays with 4096-by-2304 resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors

Thunderbolt 3 digital video output

  • Native DisplayPort output over USB‑C
  • VGA, HDMI, and Thunderbolt 2 output supported using adapters (sold separately)

and the Dell P2715 has (from http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&sku=210-AD OF )

DisplayPort in

Mini DisplayPort

DisplayPort out

HDMI (MHL)

so, you will need one of these

I have the P2715Q and have been using it with my Late 2015 15" MBP with a DisplayPort to Thunderbolt (mDP) adapter. I've made the same work with a 2014 15" MBP. I'm having a hard time with my new 2016 15" MBP. I tried to connect the DisplayPort to Thunderbolt to the USB-C to Thunderbolt converter from Apple. The MPB doesn't detect the P2715Q and no signal is sent. I've also tried using the mDP port on the P2715Q directly to the Apple USB-C to Thunderbolt convert and no joy. I did notice the Apple converter go VERY HOT. Monoprice makes a $35 USB-C to DP cable for $34.99 which is supposed to work. It says it supports up to 100W of power, which I don't thing the Apple converter supports. Monoprice also makes a USB-C to DP adapter that is said to work as well. Both are Out of Stock as of today. Both give full 3840x2160 @ 60Hz. Good article here http://blog.fosketts.net/2016/10/30/2016-macbook-pro-usb-cthunderbolt-survival-g uide/.
