iCloud Photo Library vs Photo Stream?

Can someone please very specifically explain to me what the difference is between iCloud Photo Library & the iPhone photo stream?

What are the advantages & disadvantages of iCloud Photo Library as opposed to photo stream?

A little background info: I have thousands of photos on my current iPhone. I can no longer backup my iPhone to iCloud unless I buy more storage (which I'm not willing to do just yet).

So I don't even know if I could adequately use iCloud Photo Library without having any iCloud storage left ..

Photostream can transfer some of your photos to your Mac, iCloud Photo library can transfer all of your photos to the iCloud Library on the web.

Also, Photostream keeps a maximum of 1,000 picture and it will only retain the pictures for 30 days.

Photo Stream is stored on Apple's servers, hence the 30 day/1000 photo limit. It is not part of your 5GB free account. If you don't download those photos before those quotas expire, they are removed and not retrievable. It is a lousy back up strategy.

No video, Photos may be downsized. Photos are not viewable on icloud.com.
