Hi chuckhound awr,

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. I understand that you're not seeing the option to send a handwritten message when you rotate your iPhone within Messages. I know how much fun it is to be able to use the message effects and I can assist you. First, restart your iPhone: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch . When it reboots, open Messages and tap the contact you want to send a hand written message to before you rotate your phone. If the issue persists then follow the steps to send a handwritten message, you may have to look for the symbol on your keyboard listed in step 3:

Send a handwritten message

You can personalize your messages by adding a note in your own handwriting. Your friends and family will see the message animate, as if it were being written in front of them. To send a handwritten note, follow these steps:

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Tap User uploaded file and enter a contact or go to an existing conversation.
  3. If you have an iPhone, turn it sideways. If you have an iPad, tap User uploaded file on the keyboard.
  4. Write your message or select one of the options at the bottom of the screen.
  5. If you need to start over, tap Undo. If not, tap Done. Then tap User uploaded file to send.

You need iOS 10 to send and receive an animated handwritten message. If you have iOS 9 or earlier, you'll receive a still image.
