Microphone not recognized on new track

I set up with an external mic and was able to record quickly and without issue. I saved the test track and then tried to record a second one. Now the mic is no longer picking up any sound. What's even more frustrating is that I reopened the original track and was able to add to it with the external mic without issue.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be occurring?

Hello linzi6981!

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! I see from your post that after recording a test track in GarageBand, the external mic is no longer recording sound. Being able to use your mic at all times when making great projects in GarageBand is very important, and I want to help you in any way that I can.

We have a great resource with some great steps called: GarageBand for Mac: Connect a microphone

Take a look at the steps in this article, particularly these steps:

Set the input source for a microphone

  1. Select the audio track.
  2. Click the Smart Controls button to open the Smart Controls pane, then click the Inspector button .
  3. In the Recording Settings section, choose one of the following from the Input pop-up menu:
    • If you’re using your computer’s built-in microphone, choose Built-in Microphone.
    • If you’re using a microphone connected to your computer’s audio input port, choose Built-in Input.
If Built-in Input doesn’t appear in the menu, choose GarageBand > Preferences, click Audio/MIDI, and choose Built-in Input from the Audio Input pop-up menu.
    • If you’re using a microphone connected to a USB port, choose the microphone.
    • If you’re using a microphone connected to an audio interface, choose the channel number for the microphone.
If the audio interface channels don’t appear in the menu, choose GarageBand > Preferences, click Audio/MIDI, then choose the audio interface from the Audio Input pop-up menu.
  4. Make sure the format matches the microphone or instrument. Choose a mono input for monophonic instruments (with a single channel), and choose a stereo input for stereo instruments (with a pair of channels).
  5. Drag the Recording Level slider to change the input volume level for the sound source.
If the Recording Level slider is dimmed, you can’t change the input volume in GarageBand. In this case, use the device’s own volume control.

Turn on monitoring for a microphone

In the Smart Control inspector, click the Monitoring button .
The Monitoring button lights orange to indicate that monitoring is turned on.

You should usually turn off monitoring when you’re not playing or singing. When monitoring is turned on, your computer can pick up output from your speakers or monitors, causing unwanted feedback. Using headphones rather than speakers to listen to your projects can help eliminate feedback.

Let us know if these steps addressed your issue.

Kindest regards!
