With previous iPhones, I wasn't able to take my iPhone in the bathroom during the shower because it would create water damage due to the steam - note I am trying to set it on the window sill, not directly in the shower, so I can listen to news/music. Is this safe to do with the iPhone 7?

Here is what Apple tells about this:
"To prevent liquid damage, avoid ... using iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus in a sauna or steam room"
So I think it would be safer not using it in the shower.

iPhone 7 is splash and water resistant, but it is not waterproof and it should not be taken into the shower or placed too closely nearby.
In addition to its other guidance regarding water exposure, Apple advises that iPhone 7 should not be used in environments such as steam rooms or other extremely humid conditions.

I Have no idea what country you are in, but in my neck of the woods, theses are easily available, very reliable, quite inexpensive and they work very well. I have been using one of these for years.
I imagine that there are variations galore in other stores and in other countries as well. Leave the phone out of the bathroom.
