Quit Mail after sending iCal email alarm

I don't mind Mail popping up to send my email alarms, but I don't like the way it stays open after they've been sent. I've written an applescript to force Mail to quit 15 seconds after sending, but there should be a setting somewhere -- in Mail or iCal -- that does the same thing. Am I missing something here?
