Determing song order in iPod Shuffle

I used to be able to sequence the songs exactly as I want them to play... but ever since I installed the latest iTunes version, I can no longer determine the song order. I mean, I can sort the songs by general descriptors (such as name, album, artist, play count, etc), but I can no longer drag/drop songs to the order I want them to play in. WHY???? What am I doing wrong?

I even tried setting up a playlist in the exact order I want the songs to be in, then loading the playlist onto iPod Shuffle. But once it loads, it just resorts them according to general descriptors. Please help!

thanks!

I also have this problem with the shuttle first generation 1gb model. I like classical music, and I have found that when say a symphony is dragged to the list, it is put in reverse order. Mahler is one of my favorite composers and some symphonies have 20+ movements...

I tried to bring them over in reverse order, but the internal logic that iTunes uses in this version causes it to keep my playlist out of order. I've had problems with concertos where it will put movement three, two, then one as the order.

Hopefully there is a new version coming out soon. Otherwise, will have to upgrade...But I am hoping apple comes out with a new wireless FM iPod that blows away the Zune and want my money to go towards that.

I'm so frustrated! This is so lousy!

I can drag them into my desired order in a playlist and then drag that onto my empty iPod Shuffle 1st gen and what comes out when playing "in order" is NOT what I set up.

Alternatively, I've tried loading them onto the Shuffle and drag them within the device contents window. When I unplug, and listen the songs are NOT in my set order.

This seems to be the case in iTunes7 (ver 7.0.2.16) running on my Shuffle 1st gen. (using 1.15 software version)

Unfortunately I have tried "copy to play order" and it makes no improvement. I do not use autofill or random fill. I purge the shuffle completely of all existing tracks and then load a playlist into the "empty" shuffle and yet it STILL insists that it knows a better order than I have chosen.

Does anybody know what criteria iTunes7 is using to overide my order? It seems to be the timestamp when the file downloaded? That would make NO SENSE but that what I am observing...

I am experiencing a similar problem with my first generation shuffle since the new version of iTunes came out.
Now the podcasts that I use in a certain sequence for meditation and yoga practice play completely out of order.
I even treated them like a complilation to get them to "stick together", pardon the unscientific descriptor.
No dice.
Some of my guided meditations begin halfway through.
I've reformated the shuffle. Besides treating my yoga music like a complitation, I tried specifying that my meditations begin at "Zero" to fix the "starting in the middle" issue. Nothing has worked.
Any ideas that y'all can think of that I haven't described trying???

In a post to a different thread, I described one work-around you can try.
I discovered today, that suggestion only works with the two podcasts that I originaly tried it with, and only because they happened to be sync'd to my library in a particular order.
What I think happens... the shuffle orders podcasts by the date and time they were downloaded to your library, most recent first.
NOTHING works to change this order.

I have since submitted feedback to Apple re: podcast reordering in shuffle. Fat lot of good that will do.

In the meantime, if I absolutely MUST listen to multiple podcasts in a particular order, like for a class, then I burn them to a CD in that order and drag out the old portable CD player. 😉 Back to the stone age!

Best of luck to you all ~ Joycie

2 ways to do this:

1) Go to the playlist and organize them in the order you want, then plug in iPod and upload from that playlist. Select "replace all" when doing this.

2) Organize them in the order you want on the connected iPod's playlist thing. Then right-click on the ipod's name in the playlist menu, and click "Sync" and it should do it.

I had the same problem and I tried both ways in different cases, both worked for me using 2nd gen. ipod shuffle on itunes 7.0.2 with windows 2000
