Hi pietrofromharrow,

I can only find the databases.db file in path below.

/Users/<username>/Library/Safari/Databases

Open with TextEdit does not show any cookies but a bunch of coding text such as below:

Hi jwchong

I have just deleted the rows of the file "database.db" related to the persistent websites data.

For example, if the website data related to yahoo.com does not disappear in spite of removing it, modify "database.db" by deleting the following rows (strikethrough):

SQLite format 3 @ . @

It is not elegant and a bit rough but worked with me with no apparent consequences.

Website Data comprises of Caches, Cookies and Local Storage.

These are files stored on our computer when we visit a website to facilitate faster runtime of the browser.

Some of the information stored is login information, tracking information about the number of visits you made in a given period and such.

Caches

Caches can be removed easily by enabling Develop menu and clicking the “Empty Caches” option.

Another option is removing “Caches.db” folder in the Safari/Caches/User Library folder.

Cookies and Local Storage

Cookies folders are placed in various locations by macOS and not easily accessible.

Some of the locations are Cookies Local Storage and Webkit folders.

These come mainly from Bookmarks,Favorites TopSites, sites we visit, builtin “Share” menu items,

built-in search engines, items in the “Popular” folder, etc.

There are “Ever cookies”.

Read the explanation about Ever cookies by thomas_r.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7820242?answerId=31227287022#31227287022&ac_cid=ha123456

iCloud syncing

If our Mac is synced with iCloud, these cookies will repopulate even after removing them.

Cookies can come from Plug-ins and extensions installed on our Mac. There are Flash cookies.

One site may add any number of cookies under different names.

The home page I have set, stores about 70 cookies/website data.

When we visit Apple site, “badgeville” local storage file will appear.

This issue is not particular to Safari.

Compared to other browsers, Safari is more willing to show the presence of website data.

The “killer application” known as Internet/WWW presents it’s own peculiariies,

some of which we don’t like, but we cannot do much about it.

Note:

Symantec application is unnecessary on a Mac.

Thanks for taking the time to post this - I found it after much searching and it worked perfectly! I finally know how to get rid of those random websites that keep popping up under manage website data! It would be nice if sites that you have never visited didn't track you even when you have your cookies set to current website only but I guess that's just a dream.

Nov 8, 2017 6:03 PM in response to jwchong

I have turned off Safari and deleted databases, localstorage, history, turned Safari back on and deleted the whole list of cookies, and once again deleted anything in databases, localstorage, history.

Nothing will delete cookies in Safari. Nothing.

Apple, please don't advertise how you are using AI to protect us when you won't even let us delete cookies manually.

Even when I click the 'block all cookies' they keep coming back !

Cookies rule Safari, not the users.
