IOS 10.2 and Ripped Videos

Prior to IOS 10.2 I was able to view video I had ripped on the Videos app in IOS. The process I used was to rip the video and then import them into iTunes. Then I synced my iPhone with iTunes and my movies were download and viewed using the Videos app.

IOS 10.2 no longer includes the Video app and the new TV app will not allow me to watch these ripped videos. Does someone have a solution or am I simply missing something?

I struggled with this and then seem to have fixed it, but not sure if that was pure luck. I have 10.2, and an iphone 5.2. I ripped a video into mp4 format and dragged it into iTunes, and it (magically) appeared under "home videos".

Fine.

Then upgraded to TV app, and there was no longer a "home videos" section.

I got frustrated, downloaded the vlc app.

Then when I was syncing, I got to the point that looks like this on the computer:User uploaded file

Now I dragged the video (the revenant) over the spot where the black box is covering up my name. A blue outline will appear around the various parts of the iphone indicating you're dragging it there. Then, when I looked on my iphone, on the TV app, there was now a category called "home movies" and you could see the home movie which I've entitled "the revenant". You get the idea....

I had the same problem and took matters to my own hand. Being a developer I wrote an App myself which is now available for free on the App Store for iPad.

Folders are automatically categorized as TV Shows and all .m4v .mp4 and .mov files are found under movies after transferring through iTunes file transfer. More features are coming soon, hope this is a solution for the meantime until Apple fixes this.

Unfortunately, as I pointed out in my reply, I tried various suggestions before I got the videos/synching to work. Perhaps its a combination of them finally did the trick.

However, if you're seeing your DVDs show up on your iOS device but they do not play, my advice would be to:

  1. Confirm those videos play properly in iTunes on your computer (basically, making sure they use the H.264 video codec)
  2. Disable the syncing of Movies (i.e. Uncheck the Sync Movies option in iTunes)
  3. Sync your iOS device
  4. Confirm they are no longer showing up in the TV app
  5. Re-sync a single Movie you confirmed plays fine in iTunes

Good luck.

So I just figured something out. I saw in some threads that folks who were *not* in the beta program did not run into this problem when updating to 10.2: The iTunes 12.5.4.42 update *does* sync properly with the TV app. I had reverted my iPad to 10.1.1 to get the Videos app back, and I was curious to see if it would work for me. With great trepidation but hope in my heart, I updated my iPad to 10.2.

It works perfectly. Movies, TV episodes, everything, syncs as it always has.

Well, whoopty-doo, what does it all mean, Basil? It means, Austin, that if you're in the beta program, I suspect that you can delete your beta profile and, once the 10.2.1 general release drops, you could do a clean reinstall of iOS to your iPhone or iPad and the TV app and iTunes will be able to sync properly. That's a guess, but I *think* it'll work.

After trying various suggestions such as: uninstalling/reinstalling the TV app, signing out and then back into iCloud, disabling movies sync in iTunes etc. to no avail...

Wh

at finally fixed this for me was to reset my iPhone settings via:

Settings > General > Reset All Settings

Unfortunately, although this doesn't delete any of your data it will require you to spend some time setting up your phone again (i.e. Touch ID and all apps that use it, wallpapers, secured password, etc)

On the plus side, your ripped DVDs will appear alongside any iTunes purchased content and you'll be able to sync via iTunes again.

Good luck!

Apple indeed focuses on its iTunes store and makes it harder to watch your content purchased elsewhere. I use VideoDrive for Mac to restore drag & drop to iTunes. It allows me to add any format to iTunes, while also adding metadata and artwork. There are several tools out there that do this, but this one is the easiest to use. Also, after finishing an import, you can set it to automatically sync with any connected iOS devices so your videos are transferred.

I unable to sync home videos from the latest version of iTunes running on macOS to my iPhone 7 Plus running 10.2. I'm getting the following error message.

User uploaded file

There's no Videos app installed, because 10.2 doesn't have a videos app!

Is anyone else experiencing the same problem?

I was able to find the solution to my question by doing a little research.

What I found is IOS 10.2 has a new widget called TV. After enabling that widget I was able to watch the videos I ripped and synced using iTunes. To locate the widget open the IOS device to the home screen and swipe to the right, then scroll down to the bottom and tap Edit , next tap the TV widget and you're done.

OK but that doesn't help me sync new videos. itunes is complaining about an app that apple removed and refuses to sync any new videos to my ipad!

Your version of iTunes is likely out of date. Please go to the Mac App Store and install any recommended updates.
