Power off Graphite Apple Studio Display?

Hi there!

I have obtained this nice old 15" Graphite Apple Studio Display at a bargain price in Berlin. It is in very good condition, the picture is quite allright for what it is and what I will use it for. Currently I have connected it to my 2010 Mac Pro and everything is fine except those situations where I want to turn it off - for example when watching a movie on my main display. The power button does nothing. I dug up a document that mentions an Apple supplied system extension that provides an interface for the Monitor Control panel in Classic Mac OS here : http://tim.id.au/laptops/apple/displays/studio.15dvi.pdf

And I was wondering if any version of Mac OS X - starting from version 10.0 has supported a regime when I can just toggle the monitor off? Was there ever an OS X driver with this behaviour supplied? I believe the power signal is being sent through USB. Is there a way to log the USB command that the monitor is sending and somehow re-implement it? Is there any solution to this?
