Keychain error -25299; cannot back up to Time Capsule

Evening all. After the 10.12.2 update today, I had a couple of failed Time Capsule backup messages, but since I wanted to start afresh anyway, I erased the disk and tried to start a new one.

Trying to log into the Time Capsule disk ("Data"), I kept getting the error -25299:

Keychain error -25299 occurred while creating a System Keychain entry for the username XXX and URL YYY... etc.

I looked into the Keychain Access app, and tried deleting these entries (which have no username), but to no avail. On further investigation, I find two earlier versions of these entries, but in the System keychain, labelled as "Time Machine password" rather than "network password".

These cannot be deleted, even after unlocking the System chain. The error here merely says

UNIX[Operation not permitted]

I note references in questions from years ago about a repair utility for the Keychain, but it doesn't seem to exist anymore.

My Linux years are long ago; does any kind soul know of a simple way of ridding myself of these turbulent keys?

The number is different but the same method might work.

Keychain error 100001 when attempting to reconnect time machine.

Your error might be related to other things.. have you done a google.

Thanks for the reply squire; I've seen variations on these, none of which helped. Also tried Bing (google? ptui!). But there's a recovery terminal command I can try.

It's possibly related to the FileVault doodad; will try switching that off later. One of these entries refers to the old MacBook backup, which is no longer applicable. I wonder vaguely if I can try it on that machine (although it's been reset since).

Update:

The method described by the good Kaemaahl in the second post linked above has done the trick; gracious bows and many thanks to you both! 😀

Now I just wonder if I can re-enable FileVault without breaking the backup again... 😉
