Which formats does Mac DVD player accept?

I hope I'm in the right community here, so please accept my apologies if I'm not. I just recorded a video with my iPhone, and want to burn it to a blank DVD for my other family members, so they can play it either on their Mac's DVD player, or in a standard DVD player. Could anyone tell me what format I should use for this? I know that I have to follow some sort of format for a North American DVD player, but other than that I really don't know much about the process I should follow.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

In order to burn a video DVD that can be played on a DVD player one must use a video DVD authoring application like iDVD. However iDVD has not been supported by Apple for a couple of years now and it is not entirely compatible with Sierra. It can work but has its difficulties.

Your best bet would be to get one of the video DVD authoring apps from the App Store. They are not as full featured as iDVD but will get the job done. There are several that offer both a free and paid version which has additional features. Try the free version and if you like it purchase the paid version for the additional features if needed.

Whatever app you use follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
