why cant I delete previous software updates and free up space?!

I realise this isn't a hardware question per se. But it seems the best place to ask... IPhone Software seems impenetrable to my novice eyes. I'm sick of deleting photos or apps to make space for constant software updates. Is there a way to remove old software versions, like in android?

There are no old software versions to remove. An iOS update replaces the previous operating system. And app updates also over-write the current app, replacing it with the new one. There is no accumulation of older copies of software in your storage space. The only thing there ever is on the device is the current version of iOS and apps - the installers over-write the installation with new, and then delete the installer itself and any temp files from the installation process.
