I am buying a new Acer monitor with DVI, HDMI and VGA ports. I don't want to use the VGA as the new monitor is digital. Which would be best mini DVI to Dvi port or mini DVI to HDMI, bearing in mind that my Mac Mini has separate sound from video. Can anyone help please?

judging from people reporting issues with thunderbolt->HDMI and not so much with thunderbolt->dvi Would go dvi
It look like the new monitor has a DVI-D port which fits with the DVI-D which came with the Mac when I bought it. I never used it as it was an analogue monitor.
If you have the Apple supplied HDMI to DVI adapter that came with the (2010-2012) Mac Mini's, then you can use that and a DVI cable.
You can also use an Apple mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter as well as some after market Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapters.
My Mac Mini is a late 2009 which has audio and video separate. The new monitor should come with a DVI-D which should work with the adapter supplied originally. All I think I need is DVI-D male to DVI-D mail cable to connect.

If you have that original adapter, then Yes all you will need is a DVI cable.
If not, then you will need to get an Apple or aftermarket Mini DVI to DVI adapter and a DVI cable.
