DiskImageMounter error message opening image files on Time Capsule

After upgrading to 10.12.2 I get the following error message when I try to open image files with a double-click on my Time Capsules: "The application "DiskImageMounter" can't be opened. -36"

The error does not occur when I open local images only with images on the Time Capsules. Same error with .dmg, .sparseimage or .sparsebundle files.

So I started getting this same error message with an external hard drive connected to an Airport Extreme. I've got a .sparseimage on the external hard drive that I get the "The application "DiskImageMounter" can't be opened. -36" error when trying to open it. I am running OS X 10.12.2 on a 2012 Mac Pro and a mid-2012 Mac Book Pro and get the error on both of them. The only thing that I wanted to add to this whole conversation is that I have another external hard drive that has a .sparseimage that was created prior to the 10.12.2 upgrade and everything works fine. To me it appears that the problem resides in the Disk Utility software and how it is creating the .sparseimage. Other thoughts?

Is that "another external hard drive" also connected to the same Airport Extreme ?

I am asking this because there will be no -36 error problem when the volume is connected directly to Mac for instance by USB, or over the network by SMB rather than AFP.

In my case, every disk image file on the network volumes connected by AFP cannot be opened by double click and returns -36 error. Whether the disk image file was created before or after updating to macOS 10.12.2 does not make difference.

That's not what I said. I said Time Capsules were intended to be used for backups. The fact that one could open files from them may or may not have been intentional or unintentional. I have no idea since I don't know anyone from Apple and they most likely wouldn't tell me anyway. As far as it being a major flaw. I've had a Time Capsule for a number of years now backing up 3 Macs. Not once has it occurred to me to open files from the Time Capsule or the other drives I use with my other Macs. I've had no need to. Backups for me are just that. Something I can restore from if I need to. This 10.12.2 issue has no affect on restoring files through Time Machine.

Actually, file sharing is yet another purpose of Time Capsule, which is clearly mentioned by Apple on its site. So, I doubt it was Apple's intention to stop users from messing with their network drives. Clearly a 10.12.2 bug, I rolled back to 10.12.1 and everything came back to its normal behavior.

The problem is not only with sparsebundles, actually the same error shows up while clicking on any file (which is supposed to be opened by associated app). It just says "Application XXX cannot be opended -36". Error appears regardless if the file is located on internal TC drive or USB-attached drive. At the same time, some people report to not having any issues at all, some were able to fix it with clean Sierra install or mounting NAS-drive through SMB instead of AFP. Anyway, I beleive this is something that was not intended and should be fixed really soon.

Looks like you don't have this problem. Lucky you! 😎 As for me, I found it first when couldn't open archive with 7z. Thought that 7z might be incompatible with latest Sierra, tried to install another archiver before realizing that I can't open any file from TC drive. At the same time I can open files through File/Open menu in application. In a similar thread, someone tried to open the same document file from USB-stick - when attached directly to Mac and then when plugged to TC port. In second case he got the same error, while he had no issues when it was attached to Mac.

After updating to macOS 10.12.2 I failed opening any of dmg, pfd and jpg files on Time Capsule HDD by double-click exactly like you. But as I reported above, the firmware 7.7.8 for Time Capsule has solved the problem with pdf and jpg files. Now I can open them by double-click. Only dmg and other disk image files including sparsebundle still cannot be opened by double-click.

Did you apply the firmware 7.7.8 to your Time Capsule ? and you still have the problem with pdf and jpg files ?

Tried to update Time Capsule firmware to 7.7.8 and open files on second MacBook Air which has also 10.12.2 installed. No success. I was only able to open pictures by using double-click, and PowerPoint presentation, for all other files is still get the same error "-36". VLC videos, Quicktime videos, text documents, app files - don't open. So I'll stick to 10.12.1 on my main laptop, until Apple figures out the problem and issues a fix. Anyway, there is no any distinctive difference between 10.12.1 and 10.12.2.

Thank you for taking the trouble to test the TC firmware with a 10.12.2 Mac.

Under the same setting, what I can open by double-click is pdf, jpg, pages and numbers. What I cannot (with -36 error) is dmg, sparsebundle, docx and xlsx.

When I consulted with a support specialist of Apple Japan about this issue back in mid December, she said they were also aware of the trouble and she supposed measures to fix it would be taken.

So I think this is a bug of 10.12.2, and will be solved sometime.
