wake sleep button stopped working on iPhone 5 when I updated to 10.1.1, any suggestions?

Turn on Assistive Touch in Settings > General > Accessibility > Assistive Touch ON

This will temporarily replace your power button for an on-screen button.

Maybe reinstalling iOS will solve your issue, but it sounds like a hardware issue.
