Setting up an Insignia NS-PCY5BMA2 bluetooth adaptor on a MAC running Sierra 10.12.1
System reports no information found on bluetooth. Internal board gave up the ghost awhile ago.
Installed new OS, zapped the pram to no avail. I wish to use a Magic Mouse, wireless keyboard and LG wireless headset. All previously worked on internal bluetooth.
I was able to get it to work on a 2011 MacBookPro running El Capitan 10.11.6 following the instructions I found here: http://www.dersoldat.org/?p=1380
It seemed way too complicated so I couldn't believe it when it actually worked. Feels good! I used this Kext utility http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Kext-Utility.shtml
I am sorry, but I have no clue whether or not an external device will work under the circumstances you describe.
