Safari 10.0.2 (11602.3.12.0.1) Memory Leak?

I just installed the latest version of Safari onto my MacBook running 10.11.6. Safari has crashed several times and at one point it was using 75GB of memory according to Activity Monitor, it is currently at 24GB, with a single tab open.

Even just sitting watching the memory utilization it constantly climbs, with nothing happening in the browser.

Has anyone else experienced this?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

And after waiting 30 minutes for the phone to answer I'll get the usual reboot, if that doesn't work reformat your machine re-install everything from scratch and you should be fine. I've been there before and after several hours of re-installing everything it turned out to be an Apple bug. Since the machine is new, the OS new, Safari up to date and my wife's identical machine installed by her suffering the same issue plus others here too I draw the conclusion that it's an Apple bug.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for change. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.

After being stonewalled by AppleSupport, I decided to fix it myself. The problem seemed to be limited to my primary user account. So I decided to reset Safari manually as the UI would only make Safari hang. Here is what I did.

  1. Quit Safari/Kill via Activity Monitor
  2. Open the Go menu in the OS X Finder
  3. Hold the Option key and choose the Library option that appears
  4. Move Safari folder to Trash
  5. Open the Library > Saved Application State folder
  6. Locate the “com.apple.Safari.savedState” folder
  7. Move this folder to the trash
  8. Open the Library > Caches folder
  9. Locate all folders that begin with “com.apple.Safari”
  10. Move these folders to the trash.
  11. Open the Library > Cookies folder
  12. Remove the file called “com.apple.Safari.SafeBrowsing.binarycookies”
  13. Open the Library > Preferences folder
  14. Remove any file that begins with “com.apple.Safari”
  15. Go to the Library > Internet Plug-Ins folder
  16. Move all items from this folder to the trash
  17. Go to the Macintosh HD > Library > Internet plug-ins folder
  18. Move all items out of this folder except the Quartz Composer.webplugin plug-in.

Start Safari, it should be good as new.

P.S. You will loose history and cookies.

Hi, I had same issue on Sierra 10.12.2 + Safari 10.0.2 after many attempts, this fix Sorted for me.

@Link Davis suggested ithis

"Back up all data before proceeding.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

~/Library/Safari

Right-click or control-click the line and select

Services Open

from the contextual menu.* A folder named "Safari" should open. Quit Safari if it's running. One or more files in the open folder should have a name beginning in "History". Move those files, and only those, to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Relaunch the application and test. If there's no change, quit again and put the files you moved back where they were, overwriting the ones that may have been created in their place. Otherwise, delete the files you moved. The browser history will be empty. If possible, restore the deleted files from a backup that predates the problem.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return."

Massive memory leak in Safari since installation El Capitan

Dec 22, 2016 7:14 AM in response to Stephen Donovan

I posted in a different thread: macOS Sierra Safari using all system memory

I'm having the exact symptom on a fresh install of Sierra. The only plug-in I had active was 1Password, and I've since disabled that. I've posted EtreCheck test results in my original post linked above. Safari worked fine on the same version I was running prior to performing a fresh reload of MacOS (I was having other problems related to Office and I'd made a mess of Ruby, Node and other command line tools as I was learning those systems. just wanted a fresh, clean start).

I am having similar problems. I've come back to my MBP after not using it for a while to find windows similar to what johntdavies posted in his reply. I don't know what is causing Safari to start "leaking". I use my laptop for a good 6 hours without an issue and then I hear my fans kicking. I look at the Activity Monitor and see Safari eating up a lot of memory and climbing. I close the app before it got too outrageous but this has been happening regularly. My only Safari plugin is LastPass and I've had that forever. I'm not doing anything differently than I have for years.
