After new install, Safari won't open at all...

Question

After new install, Safari won't open at all...

This problem is occuring with my G5 Imac and is really weird. I had all the updates on the computer and I come back from school and turn it on and I try opening Safari. The dock icon bounces and bring the browser page up, but before it even starts to load it "unexpectly quits" so I try the reopen option and it does the same thing. It then brings up the try again option, which dumps all the preferences and trys a fresh new one, but it crashes after that as well. I decided to erase and install the OS again on the drive to see if this cleared the problem and right after I get done with all the updates and repairing permissions several times, Safari crashes over and over again. I can't even get a crash report posted to you guys because I can't get the browser to even open. Anyone have any suggestions at where I could start? Thanks!

To find a Safari crash report, go to the Finder and type in the Spotlight panel "Safari.crash.log". Double click to open up the log. The log will be an accumulation of the Safari crashes you been accumulating. Copy/paste the most recent addition to your reply.

thats the thing, I am on my Macbook Pro because I cant even get the browser to open to submit the crash report to you guys. Any other suggestions on how I could get it to you?

Sorry, forgot to mention to open Safari in another User account. You can create one following guidance from Apple on how to set up the account. You can ignore step 7 in the article.

Also, on the system preference>Accounts panel, click on "log-in" options. There, select "fast user switching". This allows you to go back and forth between user accounts via an icon in your Menu Bar at the top of the computer screen.

Log-on to the new account and start Safari. If Safari works in the new account post the crash log from there. Also, if Safari is stable, then your problem is specific to your regular user account. Otherwise, similar response means a system-wide problem.

Post back with results.

Go to your Finder. In your main library (/Library), move the Internet Plug-ins folder to the desktop and restart Safari.

I was able to set up email and send the crash report to another computer to post it so here it is. I moved the folder like you said and it crashed again.

First, move the Internet Plug-ins folder back to the main library.

This may indicate a problem with RAM. It could be software related, however, my guess is "hardware".

One way to test for bad RAM is to remove the 3rd party RAM from the computer and restart. Then try Safari. If it crashes, either something else is causing the problem, or perhaps the original Apple RAM is defective.

You can test either RAM chip via the Apple Hardware Test. This is found on your Tiger Installer DVD (disk 1). insert your Tiger Installer DVD into the computer. After it loads, restart the computer. When the screen turns black, hold down the "option" key to startup from the DVD. Eventually, the Apple Hardware Test icon will appear during the startup. When it appears, select it. After fully loaded, select the "quick test" - will take about 10 minutes to run.

Post back with results.

Yes, RAM can prove defective. Did you try removing the 3rd party RAM. If not, give it a try - shut down the computer, remove the chip, restart the computer, then restart Safari? I still "smell" hardware.

I finally got to check the ram and I removed each one by themselves and neither of them solved the problem when out, I don't know what it could be.

I've had this problem.
Ever since I updated to 10.4.8 neither safari or mail will work properly.
Is there any way of going back down without a reinstall?
Very frustarting, Mail opens but if I highlight an email the thing shuts down!!

Hi Kyle

Good to know the RAM is not at the root of the problem. Have you been seeing lately any other abnormalities in your system's performance or operation other than those you have posted here?

Also, what IMac version are you using? Rev. A, Rev. B, or Rev. C (iSight)? If it is either of the first two versions I believe you can remove the back and check the logic board or power supply via the LCD unit.

The only way you can revert to an earlier version of OS X is either by reinstalling the OS, then using the combo update to the version you desire, or reinstalling an earlier bootable clone of the system.

If you are having problems specific to Mail, then please post in the Mail & Address Book forum. When you post, include a copy of your latest crash report (you can get one by clicking on the "report" button after the application crashes.

I have the version without the isight on it. You can remove the back and I have not noticed anything else wrong with the system. This problem just occured out of no where one day.
