After installing iOS 10.2 I have lost contact photos from the top of my iMessage conversations.

I have an iPhone SE. I was running 10 and 10.1 without incident but as soon as I installed 10.2 the contact photos at the top of iMessage conversations have disappeared and I'm back to the contact name. It's a minor annoyance but still. I tried restoring an older backup (10.1) and that worked fine until I installed 10.2. I tried factory restore and same result. Hard reset, toggle Contacts off/on in iCloud settings, etc. Still nothing. I've tried Apple support a few times and everyone seems completely baffled. There's nothing anywhere on the net about it. Anyone else experiencing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
