Mail sometimes deletes two emails at once

Yet one more problem with Apple Mail under Sierra (10.12.2, this time)! When I select a message in the Message Viewer on the left side of my screen and delete it, the next message to it (I think either above or below) sometimes gets deleted, too. Any suggestions for preventing this will be most welcome.

Problem solved. (I hope I do not speak too soon!) My old Apple mouse died on me — the cable frayed and broke — so I bought a very cheap (£5.00) mouse which seemed fine at first. But I ran into this problem, and another — about which I have also posted here and to which I received a reply concerning the mouse — so I splashed out and bought a new Apple mouse. I have had no recurrence of the problem.

Curious, though, because with the cheap mouse, clicking on an email did not accidentally also select a neighbouring one, and it was not till I clicked on Delete in the top toolbar that such a neighbour sometimes disappeared.

Try rebuilding the Mailbox database according to the following: Mail for Mac: Rebuild mailboxes.

It will take a few moments to complete, depending on the total number of messages in those Mailboxes. Mail's operation will also be slow until it finishes.

It would be prudent to back up your Mac prior to doing that, but if rebuilding a Mailbox causes any email messages to be lost they were probably not recoverable anyway. I recommend backing up in this particular circumstance only in an abundance of caution, but it's something everyone ought to be doing.

You are tapping one time using one finger on the trackpad , then taking your cursor on top menu bar , clicking on edit & then deleting - it deletes the single mail that you have selected .

Then instantly second mail is selected ( it will be highlighted automatically ) & you are swapping using your two fingers towards left Hand side & clicking on red highlighted icon delete , so it deletes the second mail you have selected .

Its is quite normal because if you delete the first mail the second mail is automatically highlighted and selected .

Thanks very much, John Galt. I have done what you advise. As far as I could see it worked with my btinternet inbox and my iCloud one, but nothing seemed to happen with my gmail inbox (unless it happened too fast for me to detect that it had happened, which is unlikely because gmail is my main current email service and there is a considerable number of messages in that inbox. And, similarly, nothing seemed to happen when I tried to rebuild my 'smart mailboxes', i.e. Received Today, Received Yesterday and All Mail. It is my Received Today inbox that I always go to first on starting up my Mac, and therefore it is in that smart inbox that I have observed this disturbing phenomenon of two messages being deleted at once.
