Getting iPhone from US to use in India

Hi All,

Need a help. I want to buy an iPhone(SIM Free) from Apple store to use it in India. Can anyone let me know if it will work fine with carriers in India? One of my friend got an unlocked phone from a different vendor this Thankgiving, but its not accepting any SIM in India. Please advise on this.

Thanks.

Yes if you buy in directly at one of Apple stores. Other iPhone sold at third party vendors are locked to a cellular carrier. I've seen a few posts from users who bought an "unlocked" iPhone at Best Buy and found their phone is locked. I should also point out that your iPhone will have no warranty in India. If it's defective, you're on your own.
