"Fixing Damaged Partition Map" Operation Failed?

Hi everyone-

Until yesterday I've been using an external 2TB Seagate HDD to store large audio-visual files (photos, movies, iTunes library, etc.).

This morning I plugged in the drive and got this message: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." Oh my.

I tried Disk Utility First Aid and got this message: "Fixing damaged partition map. The operation couldn't be completed. (com.apple.DiskManagement error -69874.) Operation failed..."

This sounds very, very bad. I have backed up about two-thirds of the data on the drive but the remaining third has some irreplaceable data (I know, I know). Otherwise, I would erase and restore, but if there is ANY other option available I would be groveling in gratitude!

Many thanks...

Just a quick update: connected the disk to my Windows bootcamp partition (seemed sensible as it's NTFS formatted) and ran the "Scan", which picked up that it needed "Repairing"... Ran that. The Linux based NAS (that the USB drive was backup storage for) now recognises the disk without any partition complaints.

Disk Utility on the mac still isn't happy with it, but that may be due to it being NTFS and connected via Paragon (some kind of interop software for Mac).

It is likely that the original issue may not have been fully eradicated, but it does work. So I'm happy with this sticky plaster for now... Until my backups fail 😀
