Why generic jpeg icons on desktop with Sierra?

AND I can't seem to post this...third attempt, forgive if duplicate...but icons on desktop are randomly generic instead of specific jpeg/png thumbnails. . .also click/hold on icon name to change it doesn't seem to work with Sierra. Any ideas? Thanks, M. Zashin
