Search Engine Icons/Links Missing

I'm new to Apple devices so please bear with me. A couple of months ago, I bought an iPad Air 2, which I had to return due to a malfunction. Anyway, when I opened safari on that ipad and tapped the address bar at the top of the screen, a sub-bar would open and show icons for four search engines. Flash forward to today. I got my replacement iPad, opened safari, and clicked the address bar. A sub-bar opened, but it was blank. The four search engine icons were gone. i love this feature and would like to get it back. Any suggestions?

I believe you want the Favorites pane. Did it look like my screenshot below with the 4 icons your mentioned ? If yes go to the websites then bookmark them as Favorites. You can also have them appear in the Favorite bar above the tabs if you like. Go to settings> Safari> show Favorites bar> on.
