Error --> com.apple.Safari.History quit unexpectedly.

Hello, I'm a bit new to MacOS and i have a problem like this; when i'm trying to search something in spotlight or simply want to do simple calculation in it, like when i press any button after opened the spotlight, it crashes and says "com.apple.Safari.History quit unexpectedly.". I tried to do reindexing the spotlight but it didn't work and as a note i never use Safari on my mac, it has a pure clear history also...

To recap, the error/crash occurs when using Spotlight - for me by calling Spotlight with ⌘-Space, and invoking a search. The error does not appear on initially invoking Spotlight, only after hitting Return. "Disabling" Spotlight has no impact (i.e. unpicking some or all Spotlight options via System Preferences -> Spotlight and adding all hard drives to Privacy list - this effectively wipes all Spotlight indexing stored in /.Spotlight-V100. Yet- calling Spotlight results in an error and crash dialog. An adverse side effect of disabling Spotlight is that other search functions like searching within Apple Mail or Contacts, use Spotlight and are useless if the Spotlight indexing is disabled.

One option to avoid the annoyance that seems to work is to turn off the Crash Reported Dialog via a Terminal command window and entering: defaults write com.apple.CrashReporter DialogType none

See http://osxdaily.com/2010/02/15/disable-the-crash-reporter-dialog-in-mac-os-x/ for reference and to reverse the command. NOTE - this does not fix anything, it just keeps the error dialog from popping up.

Another helpful hint: I use Spotlight via ⌘-Space mostly to start or recall applications. Creating a keyboard shortcut to launch Launchpad is a workaround (See System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts -> Launchpad & Dock to set). I set my Launchpad shortcut to ⌘-L, which does not appear to conflict with other shortcuts I have set.

Having the same problem myself. Reinstalling OS X "resolves" the problem with no loss of information...until I installed the Safari 10.0.2 update again–then the problem appeared again.

Tried "resetting" Safari by manually clearing out history, extensions, cookies, preferences, cache, etc..., but no luck there.

Tried recreating the local account entry in the OS directory services, which was extremely easy to do, but did not solve the problem.

The issue seems specific to my one account. Other accounts on the system, or newly created accounts, show no issue after hours of working in them. Was really hoping there was a way to fix this without needing to move all my data to a new user account. It sure seems like it's something in my user preferences–something specific to this one user. Cleaning up unnecessary preferences from apps I no longer have installed seems to help a bit, but the problem never appears consistently, so it's hard to tell if I'm just getting lucky, or actually doing something to resolve matters. Sometimes every few seconds, it crashes, sometimes I can go a half hour without seeing it.

For what it's worth, here's some of the crash details I see. If this truly is the problem, wonder why it doesn't effect all accounts.

I'm not so sure that a new account will make a difference. Although I did not see the pop-up error message when logged in as the new user, I think the com.apple.Safari.History crashed out anyway - it just didn't show the error reporting popup for that user. I'm not an expert at the Console logs, but it did appear to generate a crash report for that user - just didn't present the popup to report to Apple.

Separately, I also tried to report this to Apple support, but someone in the Developer program can file an actual Bug Report - I cannot.

Dec 19, 2016 4:16 PM in response to umutkeskin_

It seems to be a bug triggered by Spotlight searches.

See this thread on Stack Exchange: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/264817/error-message-com-apple-safari-h istory-was-closed-unexpectedly

There doesn't seem to be a consistently successful workaround, at least not one that is worth the effort. E.g., I'm not going to reinstall from TM backup just to get this to stop.

Dec 19, 2016 8:29 PM in response to umutkeskin_

Just upgraded to 10.11.6/Safari 10.0.2 and also had this problem. Here's a weird workaround:

Open Terminal

type "open Safari" [return]

For me, this starts Safari up with no problems (even though I can't start it from the GUI).

I had started down this road by going into the actual package directory (/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS) and starting there, but discovered that even just calling "open" on it works for me. Why the GUI won't open it but I can from command line is very weird. There should be no difference between the two theoretically.

Dec 26, 2016 4:04 PM in response to Eric Tiffany

Hi.

According to Apple, there is no fix or workaround at this time. Their engineering staff "is aware of the issue."

Re-installing from TM: assuming you go back before you updated Safari (10.0.2). How about your data since?

Apple urges that you do nothing except keep your MAC up to date. That means, and a tad cynical, that when/if they have a fix, they communicate that via a suggested software update.....

As is, regrettably, Spotlight, one of the highlights of the latest OSs, is totally useless.
