I seriously need apple to bring back iDVD!

I have clients waiting on DVDs and I use iDVD and it's not responding anymore!! PLEASE, I am in serious need for apple to bring back and create an update to iDVD!!! Come one, why in the work did apple stop making updates for this amazing program?

AHHH I am loosing my mind and sleep over this, I can not find any other burning software that compares to iDVD. Nothing is recognizing the chapter markers from FCPX and this has become increasingly fustrating!!

I have gotten no good responses about this and iDVD, and I can't seem to get a hold of anyone a actual apple about this. DO they not care about their customers?????

I am to the point that I will complete have to change systems and say good by to apple if I can't get any new information on this situation.

I NEED this program iDVD to work for my clients!!! Its the only one out there that use to do everything I wanted it to!!

PLEASE I am desperate!!1

I agree. The loss of iDVD is a serious blow to a lot of us who develop video for institutions. We deal with material that is not intended for web distribution. My videos reside in a library of DVDs used in an educational environment. The use of Chapters Menus is absolutely essential for my clients. Yes, I know that Final Cut Pro will export to Compressor and I can burn a DVD from there. But the menu is clunky, not customizable in any useful way, and the resulting DVD Chapter Menu is not at all user friendly. Third party programs are not helpful because they really don't handle chapters very well either. Social media seems to be the driving force in video sharing today and this a useful tool. I like it just fine. But the reality is that many fine educators, people with knowledge (and grant money) to share, are not very technically proficient.

I realize that this may be viewed as a "legacy" issue, but the DVD is not dead. Lots of us would really appreciate having iDVD or another program to work with for the foreseeable future.

If you have iDVD it was said to still be working with El Capitan - it is not that hard to keep one older mac on EC (or Mavericks or Snow Leopard) - or have an install of one of fhose older OS in an external drive and keep using old software on a system that supports it. Keep in mind that iDVD has not been updated for years. My 2005 iMac G5, however, still works and has. SuperDrive built-in - if I had to rely on iDVD I could use that - and you may also have an older machine just doing nothing...

I would like to recommend Parallels Desktop for Mac instead of Bootcamp - you never have to restart your Mac to run Windows or Linux apps.

You might want to look into DVD Styler (http://www.dvdstyler.org/en/downloads). It's free! (Open source) ... and there's a Mac version. I don't know anything about it but the features list Scripting which was very important to me when using DVD Studio Pro back in the day, a feature that set DVDSP apart from all the others. Another interesting feature is that it will allow you to use already encoded VOB files (without reencoding), meaning you could probably "burn" (to HD) a DVD out of FCPX and construct custom menus in another project and not have to start over with new media files.

I wouldn't expect to see anything more from Apple supporting optical media... Even though there's still plenty of use for it, it's a dead end. Optical media is terribly inefficient and requires specific hardware. The future of video distribution already is streaming using other more efficient codecs and formats for mobiles (phones/portables), desktops, media players like ROKU, Apple TV, etc. and better controlled distribution outlets (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Apple, etc). It's the difference between horse & buggy (optical media) and jet aircraft. And things are changing faster all the time.

Apple will not bring it back. The market is going toward internet and you can't do nothing about it. Yes you can quit using Apple and then what? Going with Adobe? They left their DVD software on the shelf too.

I can give you 2 options:

1. You can do it all in FCPX - File ► Share ► DVD

All your markers will stand and you can customize the background menu. This is very basic but its very fast and very easy.

2. You can use Adobe Encore DVD (legacy)

All your markers will stand and you can customize everything. This software is good enough for most DVD project.

I agree with Meg - if you can't make it work correctly in Sierra then your best bet is to having it on an older system.

Turning back your main mac just for this app may be too much.

Alternatives:

1) Keep one mac on El Capitan for this or stuff that does not work well in Sierra

2) Have an install of EC on a separate drive or partition and reboot to this when you need to use iDVD

3) Install EC in a virtual machine and use it in emulation

If it were me I'd choose 1 if there were an older mac available or 3 other

Encore is no longer in active development. Encore CS6 was the last version released.

The CS6 applications are still available are part of a Creative Cloud membership. Encore is installed by first installing Premiere Pro CS6, which includes Encore CS6.

This document describes the process of installing Encore CS6.

Note: The ability to install CS6 applications is only available to paid Creative Cloud subscribers and not available with trial memberships. It is not possible to install Encore CS6 with a trial membership to Creative Cloud.

It's always frustrating when a workflow that has been working great stops working. But as we all know, technology does move forward and sometimes we need to adjust our workflows, "freeze" a system for a specific mission critical task, or re-assess our mission and priorities.

No one has asked yet the complexity of your setup in iDVD. I haven't used it in years (using either built-in FCP options, DVD Studio Pro, or Encore depending on needs) but I remember there were some very basic templates and some more complicated ones. Do your DVD's require extensive use of drop-zones and must have the animated bumpers etc, or are text based Chapter Marker choices good enough? If text based navigation is ok, you can do that right within FCP X and you'd still be able to customize static background images, logos etc directly inside. It's a little limiting, but may be just what you need (and more importantly) and it works.

Encore is available to subscribers of Adobe Creative Cloud. There is a Mac version.

Since it is not a current application, there is a rather convoluted method of getting it:

https://helpx.adobe.com/encore/kb/encore-cs6-installed-cc.html

Note: Encore is as complex and has as steep a learning curve as Apple's DVD Studio Pro, its one time competitor.

Neither is designed for simplistic use the way iDVD was.

IMHO, unless you are really committed to learning a complex application, you would be better off just getting an older Mac that will run iDVD and do your disc authoring there.
