iWatch display turns off when in use

Today, my new iWatch 2 started to turn off the display about 2 seconds after I touched the screen. It made navigating or selecting any app very difficult. After a few tries I was able to power it down and it seems to be back to normal now. Has anyone else experienced this? How can it be prevented?

As the steps that you have taken have resolved the issue, there is no need to take any further action at present.

Should it recur, the following steps may help:

If you have not yet done so, update your iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest software, starting with your iPhone:

Restart both your iPhone and your watch:

Close the Watch app on your iPhone:
- Double-click the Home button, then swipe up on the app preview to close it.
Turn both devices off together, then restart your iPhone first:
- Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
- Restart your Apple Watch - Apple Support

Unpair and re-pair your watch:

The Watch app on your iPhone takes a backup of your watch automatically when unpairing via the app. Choose to Restore from Backup during set up. Most data and settings will be restored, with some exceptions (eg Apple Pay cards, passcode).
