macOS Sierra Safari using all system memory

I have an early 2015 13" Retina MacBook pro, with 8GB of memory. I've been running Sierra for a while, but due to various self-inflicted issues, I decided on a clean install.

The reinstallation went well, but Safari is causing lots of problems. As soon as I open Safari, memory use goes up dramatically. Within a minute, Activity Monitor shows 9GB of memory used (nearly the same for compressed memory). Eventually, it just keeps going, and I have to force-quit. This happens after restarts, and I also disabled my one and only browser extension (1Password). User uploaded file

Again, no problems until after I wiped the drive and reinstalled MacOS 10.12.2 (16C68).

Go to Safari/Preferences/Privacy and see if you can find a cookie for that website. If you do, delete it.

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

If that doesn't work, try running this program in your normal account , then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

I have been having same problem since December. Note that I resolved the issue once I rolled back to Sierra 10.12.1.... then my Mac updated itself automatically a few days later ARGH! Having daily phone calls with Apple Geniuses and this morning was told to create a new user profile. It's taken me 5 hours or migration, setting up documents, sorting out merge issues - and now Safari has run out of application memory on NEW PROFILE. I am so hacked off.

Absolutely ridiculous. Did anyone get a solution?

Feb 9, 2017 7:52 AM in response to griz_fan

Having tried different solutions people have posted on various forums I have found the best solution posted at https://www.reddit.com/r/applehelp/comments/5iyvmu/safari_using_up_all_applicati on_memory/

The advice was to enter the following commands into the terminal window:

mv ~/Library/Safari ~/Desktop/Safari-

date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S

rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/Apple\ -\ Safari\ -\ Safari\ Extensions\ Gallery

rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari

rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari

rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess

rm -Rf ~/Library/Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies

rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/Apple\ -\ Safari\ -\ Safari\ Extensions\ Gallery

rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist

rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist

rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist

rm -Rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.WebFoundation.plist

When deleting history some items on certain dates had to be deleted 3-6 times, and one - a very nondescript shopping site for some normal items - won't delete at all. What would cause this and can it be fixed without clearing all the cookies? I'm running a 2017 MacBook Pro.

Even after history deletion Safari is running very slowly - and this a fairly stripped down machine with few of my apps and files even installed/loaded yet.

Please run EtreCheck and post the report here.

http://etresoft.com/etrecheck

Download it, open Downloads folder, click on it to open, and then select ”Open”.

Click on the bouncing EtreCheck icon in the Dock.

“Choose a problem” from the popup menu box, and then “Start EtreCheck” in the dialog.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” .

Paste it here when you reply.

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items. Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site.

Same problem is happening for me: memory is keep going up and i cannot quit Safari in a usual way by hitting cmd+q or Safari -> Quit — it is just stopping responding and i see spinner cursor permanently. Tried following Eric's steps but with no success. Also tried creating a new user and launching Safari there — it works just fine.

P.S. i installed Safari Technology Preview for same user that i having problems with and it also works as expected.

Hope Apple will ship a hotfix soon and i woudn't need to move all my documents/data/etc. to a new user.
