Safari doesn't save cookies

I'm at a loss as to why Safari seemingly ignores my cookies every time I quit and re-open the app. I'm using macOS Sierra 10.12.2 with Safari 10.0.2 on an almost entirely clean install (just bought a new MacBook Pro two weeks ago). The scenarios typically go like this:

  1. Open a new instance of Safari
  2. Open a site like trycaviar.com
  3. Observe that the site does not think I'm logged in
  4. Log into the site
  5. For the duration of the Safari instance (i.e., as long as I don't quit the app), the site will continue to see me as logged in, even when I open a new tab and browse to it
  6. Close, and re-open Safari
  7. Browse back to trycaviar.com
  8. The site no longer sees me as logged in

Importantly, this behavior works flawlessly in Chrome (i.e., it keeps me logged in across application instances). This same issue also seems to occur on sites like YouTube, where Safari forgets my preferred viewing mode (theater) and always puts me back to "Default View."

I've tried to clear my website data ("Remove All" from the "Manage Website Data" dialog) and my "Cookies and website data" radio button is set to "Allow from websites I visit." The only Safari extension I have installed is 1Password.

How can a browser that's been around so long be so fundamentally broken? I feel like I give it a try every time a new version of the OS comes out but quickly run back to Chrome due to Safari's myriad usability issues and glacially slow update cycle. As such, I end up losing out on some of the nicer features (e.g., Reading List and Apple Pay) because the core browsing experience is just unusable.

Dominic, this has nothing to do with AutoFill. My concern is related specifically to cookies. AutoFill is a browser feature that helps when a session cookie has expired or does not exist; it does not cause Safari to save cookies across application launches -- that should be done automatically, unless using a mode specifically designed to erase cookies at termination (e.g., private browsing/incognito mode). I do find it funny that your response is listed as "Apple recommended," however. Just shows how ignorant they are of their own products, I guess, if someone at Apple flagged it as such.

Eric, I'll try to go that route. I've never felt quite right about just reporting issues into the black hole that is Apple's feedback system, but there really aren't many other options.
