iPhone 5s iOS 10.2 Battery drains quickly

With the recent updates my phone keeps draining faster and faster. The other day I was using it, it was at 53% and suddenly it just shut down saying the battery was dead. When I reset and restarted the phone it came back on and said the battery was at 46%. I have to charge it about 3 times each day even with minimal usage.

I took it in to the Apple store and was told I needed to buy a new battery. When I asked why it started with the latest updates I was told the agreement says it could have an impact on older devices and that I should not update any more. When I asked if updates were needed for some apps I was told yes. I also believe that upgrades offer some security protection enhancements as well.

I am left with paying $80 for a battery on a phone that is only worth $95 on trade in and not able to take advantage of any further updates - Or buy a new phone. I just bought 2 new iPads for the family. I was hoping my phone would last a little longer than this.

I am looking to see if anyone has other ideas that might help resolve the battery draining issue?

I set the brightness way down almost to nothing. Most notifications and app tracking is turned off. I do have an Apple Watch but with few apps.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This issue seems to be related to iOS 10.1 - 10.2 and seemingly is affecting iPhones (regardless of model) that are running it (not all are affected). The iPhone 6s (only certain serial numbered devices) currently has a battery recall in effect but the other iPhone models do not. I have a 5s running iOS 9.3.5 and battery life is as fine as it's ever been. I refuse to update it until all is clear with this battery issue and iOS 10.x. A friend has the 6s running iOS 10.1.1 (we did NOT install iOS 10.2 because it seemingly makes the issue worse, going by the many comments) and has the battery issues mentioned. The iPhone fell under the 6s battery recall program and has been replaced by Apple with no change. This leads me to believe that it's iOS related and not hardware related.

iOS 10.1 Battery drain

Hi everyone,

I thought i would share my experience, I was actually in the Apple Store in Regent Street when my iphone 5 s with ios 10.2 just died on me, It was only a few minutes before that i saw a low battery warning, so i had 20% of battery.

The employee at the shop said it might be due to temperature, but it wasn't that cold, and as soon as it was plugged in it came on an showed the charging screen (red battery and cable insert) as if there was next to no battery

After that when it started it showed the same amount of battery as before 20% it wasn't 3% or 4 % or anything like that where i would expect the phone to switch off and said as much to the employee, they was kind enough to let me charge until 30% and it was fine after that

Today I saw the Forbes article <http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2016/12/21/apple-ios-10-2-iphone-battery -problems/#7bdc03724f2c> and find its probably IOS 10.2, i never had any problems whatsoever like this before with the phone

Here is hoping Apple have a fix soon, i can manage for now as i am a "battery ninja", yes i typically get a week out of my iphone

But many other people wouldn't take the same approach to using the iphone (which basically boils to never having the phone part actually on and only ever connected over wifi), i would suppose if people wanted that, they would get a ipod touch!

So Apple, please put the phone back into the iphone! :-) Thanks
