Iphone/Ipad symbols showing up

Hi Everyone,

just a question regarding my iphone/ipad.

When i connect my phone/ipad into the laptap and open up itunes. The symbol of my phone/ipad does not show up at all. I want to back up my devices and open up apps on my phone while im on itunes. I recently had my laptop looked at as it was very slow. So the technician has updated my itunes. And now i can do anything. ie back up my phone or ipad, and i have deleted and re-installed itunes so what can i do so that i can do stuff to my phone etc? i have attached a photo of where the phone symbol used to be.
