Screensaver and Photos for Mac (10.12.2)

With the update to 10.12.2 my Screensaver stopped working for Photos for Mac. I can choose my old Aperture or iPhotos library but when "Photos" library is selected the message "Open Photos to see your photos in this list". Opening Photos does not do anything.

Open Photos for your current Photos Library.

Then open the Photos > Preferences > General. Is "Photos > General > Library Location: Use as System Photo Library" selected?

This option should be grayed out; if not, click it. Then quit Photos and restart your Mac.

Open Photos again and let it run, to create previews for the Media Browser.

It may take a very long time for the library to appear in the Screensaver System preferences and to show the albums and moments, when you open it the first time.be prepared to have to wait several minutes.

If the photos do not show up at all: Is your Photos Library in a location, where other applications can see it? In your Pictures folder? Or is it on an external drive? If it is on an external, is the drive formatted correctly as MAcOS Extended(Journaled) and directly connected, or is it a NAS?

Can other applications see your Photos Library? Does the Photos Library appear in Mail, when you create a new message?

User uploaded file

If you library is an iCloud Photo Library, the photos need to be downloaded from iCloud to be able to show in the Media Browser.

If no other applications can see the Photos Library at all, repair the Photos Library, see: https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.2/?lang=en#/pht6be18f93

Important: You should back up your photo library before repairing your library.

  • If Photos is open, choose Photos > Quit Photos.
  • Press Option-Command and double-click the Photos icon in the Applications folder (or click the Photos icon in the Dock). The Repair Library window opens.
  • Click Repair to rebuild your photo library.

If you are using iCloud Photo Library, all photos will upload again to iCloud Photos Library, if you repair the library.

Are you using iCloud Photo Library? If yes, are you using the "Optimize" option? Then the photos may not be showing in the Media Browser, because they need downloading from iCloud.

Uploading the photos again to iCloud would probably take days and break my 1TB data usage limit.

When photos is uploading a library again, it will merge it into the existing library and check for duplicates. So you will not need more storage, only a lot of patience. My library with 45000 photos needs more than a week to upload again, even on a fast cable network.
