Some months later yet this question is still unanswered. And I have the same question myself. Pretty important one. If I use the MacBook Pro 61w USB-C charger with the USB-C to Lightening cable to charge my iPhone 6S+, will this work, or will I fry (destroy) my iPhone. Belkin's white paper on USB-C appears to imply that the cable connector circuits will negotiate and adjust the voltage to be correct. I know the cable will connect these two devices. So what could go wrong? But I'd really, really like to know first! Please would some Apple expert answer our mutual question?

Thanks!

Thank you "NYC97992140", "sberman" and "Jonathan". After reading your replies I decided to go ahead and plug my USB-C - Lightening cable directly into my 2016 MacBook Pro's 61w USB-C power adapter. It worked to charge my iPhone 6S+ without trouble and, it appears, charged it faster than the power adapter supplied with the iPhone. My question is answered, with the answer I had hoped for!

Hi NYC97992140,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

I understand your question to be "can you charge the iPhone/iPad with the Apple 61w USB-C power adapter.

About Apple USB-C to Lightning cable

With a USB-C to Lightning cable, you can charge and sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, charge a Siri Remote, and more.

Here's what you can do with a USB-C to Lightning cable:

  • Charge your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it's connected to a USB-C port.
  • Fast charge your iPad Pro 12.9-inch when it's connected to the Apple 29W, 61W, or 87W USB-C Power Adapter.
  • Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch or import your photos when connected to a USB-C port on your Mac or PC.
  • Charge a Siri Remote when it's connected to a USB-C port on a Mac, PC, or USB-C charger.
  • Charge Apple accessories like a Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, or Magic Trackpad.
  • Use your iPhone or iPad as a Personal Hotspot when connected over a USB-C to Lightning cable.

The USB-C port on an Apple TV (4th generation) doesn't support charging, so you can't use this port to charge a Siri Remote. You might not be able to charge your iOS device using USB-C power adapters that aren't manufactured by Apple.

Cheers!

This is just information that i read earlier, and had not address my question. This information clearly state that the apple usb-c charger can "fast charge" iPad pro, and iphone/iPad can be charge from usb-c port -- does this imply that we can use apple usb-c charger to charge iphone? I have concern because the 61w power adaptor clearly state output as 20.3V==3A(USB PD), 9V==3A(USB PD), 5.2V==2.4A. Where none is the charging power that iphone used
