Corrupted video/file (again) in iCloud

Hi there,

I'm using iCloud to sync my photo library and it's the second time something really annoying happens to me.

A video was corrupted in iCloud. Namely the video of my graduation.

I have a copy of my whole library on multiple clouds and an HDD but this is having me to think about leaving the iCloud platform for photo/videos backup.

As of today (12.22.2016) every software involved is up to date on my iphone 6 and my MBP.

When I try to play it on the mac everything is fine since it's stored locally. On the iphone the video doesn't look like a video, there's no play button and no duration on the preview. In icloud I get the error you see in the attached images (first means " an error occurred when trying to download the element. Try to download it later"; second one pops up when trying to play from iCloud.com and says "unable to load the video") .

The file is an 18 minutes long, 900 mb, .m4v.

When I upload another copy of the file everything works fine.

I'v already looked for help but there's nothing that solved my problem.

What should I do?

Thanks

Sorry, but trying to play a 900MB video via iCloud may be stretching it's abilities.

Do you have this video synced to the phone? In other words, is OPTIMIZE on for your phone's library? If so, the video is downloaded each time you want to play it on the phone.

Even dedicated video sites will struggle with a file that size. You need a site dedicated to streaming video. iCloud is not that site. Or, place a copy physically on the phone and play it "locally". Just like on your Mac. You can sync a file that size using iTunes to your phone.

Why not create a smaller sized video for this? 900MB is likely too much resolution for the phone's display.

I'll assume you mean a smaller file?

Hi LACAllen, thanks for your reply.

I probably did not explain it very well but it worked for months when streamed/downloaded from iphone or icloud. There are a dozen of those 20 minutes file I access regularly and never had a problem but the two occasion I mentioned.

My problem is not to have a copy I can play easily on the iphone/icloud, my problem is to consider icloud a reliable platform to backup my photos/videos. I can't even download that file (see first screenshot)! Meaning that if I can not stream neither download it's useless.

My longer videos in a better resolution are stored in other cloud services such as amazon cloud drive.

Nope, I meant the exact same 900mb file, duplicated and re-uploaded. I have a second backup of my library.

So, is there anything I can do to recover a file when such an error occurs?

OK, but again, I think such an emphasis on longer video files is not playing to iCloud's strength.

I would never consider iCloud a reliable"single" backup strategy. Neither does Apple. I doubt you will fnd anyone here who would debate that. iCloud is about convenience.

Why do you need to recover that file? You said you had multiple backups.
