Apple Diagnosis

How does one perform a hardware test when your mac starts up as a black screen. My mac does recover from the black screen after the keyboard lights up and i put it to sleep and reopen.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12.2)

i have pressed the D following the restart, my guess is the page may indeed be opening but i cannot see what is taking place ,so ultimately i have to force my mac to shut down and restart.

A similar situation occurred where i tried using the startup disc as my windows 10 section of my hard drive following a restart but that stays as a black screen and does not recover. I found out by playing around that i was able to actually log into it like normal but results in a force restart, so i had to do an SPC resets etc to go back to my mac. i been playing around and seeing what does and does not work, as a way to manage what i have without having to pay for a fix that will cost heaps.
