I had this same issue where one Airpod was about .5 seconds behind the other.
Solution was to turn off Bluetooth on my iPhone and wait for disconnect tone on Airpods and then re-enabled Bluetooth.
All good and working perfectly again.

I had the exact same issue for two weeks now. I attempted multiple times un-pair and re-pair my AirPods with no luck to get both to work. I noticed after attempting this multiple times the audio would actually stop working on the AirPod that was previously working (right one would produce audio before un-pairing and then stop working re-paring as the left then would only produce audio).
I solved the issue by leaving the AirPods paired with the sync issue and not up-pairing them. I put the AirPods in their case and pressed and held the sync button on the back with the lid on the case open so I can see the indicator light. The indicator light blinked white and my iPhone 7 recognized the AirPods and gave me the connect screen on my iPhone and I connected allowing both of them to work. It fixed my issue and they have been working ever since.
Thanks martinctv, I followed your proposed procedure and it solved my problem.
It was very strange, I could not connect the left AND right aurpod to the same device. For example left was connected to iPhone and right was connected to macbook. This happened to me when I was switching from a Skype for Business conference on the iPhone to continue the S4B conference on the macbook. Suddenly one was connected to the iPhone and one to the mac. Or later one to iPhone and the other to iPad.
Yup, that trick worked for me. Put the AirPods in then press reset button, bingo.
That did the trick!
Thanks for your reply.
My case was a bit more extreme. I tried many things to reset the sync including returning them to the charger and letting them sit overnight before using again. In my case that didn't fix the problem.
The other thing I tried was to told down the sync button on the case for a very long time, hoping that this was a hardware reset. The light in the case flashed orange. I tried to sync it after that but it was still acting oddly.
THEN! this morning when I turned them on everything worked normally. I'm not sure if my actions fixed it or the AirPods fixed themselves but either way they are back to working normally again. Perfect timing as I'm traveling and could really use the convenience of the great new AirPods!
Do a factory reset. Put pods in the case (keep lid open) hold the button on the back 3-5 seconds until the light blinks amber 3 times, close lid Forget device in BT settings (iPhone) then reset network settings under settings- general. Once done with all that, open the AirPods case and repair. Hope this helps! It worked for me.
I only have my right AirPod working. I'm trying to do a factory reset but I can't get my case to flash amber. When I hold down the button I only get the white flashlight light to reconnect. Any suggestions please!
Yeah, I had this one time. I just put AirPods in case and then remove it from case and it get connected and work correctly.
