While setting up up my iphone of the first time, I entered what I wanted to be my passcode and proceeded through the other settings. I then switched off the phone while I took my SIM card out of the old phone, however when I turned on the new iphone, it doesn't recognise the passcode I entered before. I'm not sure if it was my error, or the phone's, but how do I gain access to reset the passcode? I had not connected to itunes/cloud beforehand.

I am a complete beginner to iphones in general so a step by step guide would be appreciated. Thanks!

IT doesn't matter if you have connected to iTunes before or not, you can still use iTunes to unlock the phone. If you didn't set up iCloud features and you are not connected to WiFi, you have to use iTunes.

This is really pretty specific and easy to understand. If the first method of using iTunes doesn't work, try using the second way which is recovery mode.

If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support

IF you don't have a computer, any computer running the latest version of iTunes will work.... a friends computer, an Apple Store, etc.

Thanks for replying. In the space between my question and your reply, I've actually stared along this process. I had to download itunes, managed to connect my iphone to it and after clicking restore, its started downloading an 'iphone software update'. Is this right? It says it's going to take 4 hours... Although that might just be due to my internet connection.

So far, it sounds correct to me. It's a pretty large download and if you have a slow connection it could take a while. Purely anecdotal, but I have found those time estimates to be pretty bad for the most part.

Hang in there and let the update download and go from there. If you have more concerns, post back.
