OpenVPN & Facetime
Hello everyone. I have made several calls to Apple Support and have not been able to get an answer yet that will solve a problem with Facetime on Mac OS Sierra on a Macbook Pro w/Retina (2016 model).
Note that Apple Support was very kind but didn’t have any info that could help solve the problem. The communities seemed the next best area to ask my question.
Both Mac OS and iOS have built-in VPN clients. Those clients support IPSEC tunneling. Many VPN services exist for free and to pay for that support both IPSEC, PPTP and OpenVPN standards.
For this scenario I have no issues using facetime with others while connected through an IPSEC tunnel and while the endpoint resides within the United States (where my traffic is dropped out of the tunnel). Also note the iPhone or Mac I use were both purchased in the US.
When I try to use the faster OpenVPN software I have calls can never be completed. There is no firewall block preventing Facetime from functioning. The VPN company does not block any ports. I have tried switching ports to ensure there is no conflict with Open VPN and any ports Facetime might need.
Has anyone run into this situation? Has anyone found a solution. So long as I use the slower IPSEC tunnel (with the same company and the same endpoint for the tunnel in the US) I have no issues. Start up an OpenVPN tunnel, regardless whether I use their app or use Tunnelblick, no luck.
I would appreciate any insight.
