Hi rjhannah,

I understand that Mail quits unexpectedly on your new MacBook Air. I know it's important to be able to easily read your messages on your new MacBook Air, so I'm happy to help.

Does this happen when doing anything specific in Mail? Here are some Mail specific troubleshooting articles for this type of issue:

If Mail unexpectedly quits when viewing certain messages - Apple Support
If Mail on your Mac quits when addressing a message to a Contacts group - Apple Support

If neither of these helps, here's another article that includes basic troubleshooting steps for apps quitting in macOS Sierra:

macOS Sierra: If an app freezes or quits unexpectedly

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Cheers!

Hi jeremy_v,

I appreciate you taking the time to offer advice on my problem. I read that sometimes a corrupted email could cause the problem and that if it that email could be found and deleted the unexpected quitting of mail would be resolved. There has been something sketchy about my Drafts folder before I purchased the new MacBook Air. I deleted all of the drafts e-mails. My mail program seems to work!

I don't know if the problem will recur or if there are other quirks I haven't discovered but for now Mail seems to work!

Thanks for your help.

I had the same issue in my system , so consulted apple support with the advisors .

A method was suggested by them :

If any particular mail in mail application is not opening or settings of mail box preferences are not properly set .

Go to user library ( click on go to go folder & type ~/Library ) > mail > right click on Perstinceinfo.plist & move to trash . Restart & empty the trash .
