com.apple.WebKit.WebContent error on Safari, AppStore and Mail

I just upgraded my MacBook Pro Retina (2015, 3.1GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB, 13-inch, 1TB) to macOS Sierra 10.12.2. Since I upgraded last week, I have been getting this error when I use iTunes (listing my library or visiting the iTunes Store), Safari, AppStore or attempt to view the content of emails in the Mail App.

Some screenshots below:

I haven't used the AppStore since, keeps crashing; I use other tools for music and Firefox for browsing. Worryingly this might be a symptom of something serious but I can't say for sure.

Does anybody know how to fix this? I have sent the log to Apple several times without a comeback so far.

Thanks.

Hello Dominic,

I've also been having similar issues. First the "web content quits" were in general with random pages and only happened every once in a while. Now, it specifically seems to only happen with my Yahoo mail, yahoo homepage or reading articles from said homepage., and not with any other pages, etc. They can happen again within seconds after reloading too. Even EtreCheck kept quitting unexpectedly within about a minute so I had work fast. Not sure if thats related.

My EtreCheck report is pasted below.

Please let me know if you see an obvious issue and anything that I may be able to do to fix it. I've rebooted, emptied caches and cleared history and cookies. I haven't been able to find the "Library Caches" from the 'Go' menu in Finder. Besides that last, the other thing I haven't tried is enabling guest and signing in to check, followed by a reboot - those last two are the only other help options I've found in these forums.

Thank you!!

This is it:

Deselect Proxies if selected.

System Preference > Network > Advanced > Proxies Tab

Unlock the lock if you have to.

Under "Select Protocol", uncheck any box if check marked.

Click "OK" then "Apply”.

If this doesn’t help, please run EtreCheck and post the report here.

http://etresoft.com/etrecheck

Download it, open Downloads folder, click on it to open and select ”Open”.

“Choose a problem” from the popup menu box and then “Start EtreCheck” in the dialog.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard”

and then paste it when you reply.

Thanks dominic23 but the suggestion to deselect proxies didn't help.

I think I might have found a fixed though... with a bit of internet search (see http://appletoolbox.com/2015/10/mac-safari-web-content-quit-unexpectedly-error-f ix/). The is solution specifically applies to Safari but interestingly it solved the problem with my Mail, AppStore and iTunes as well. It works for me if when I cleared web browsing and emptied the cached on Safari; then I enabled the guest account and rebooted my laptop.

Does anybody understand why or how these actions relate the error?

Cheers.

Webkit engine is underlying technology behind Safari, Mail, App Store, iTunes, etc

webkit

"WebKit is the web browser engine used by Safari, App Store, and many other OS X, iOS, and Linux applications."

Credit: https://webkit.org

"WebKit is used as the rendering engine within Safari and was formerly used by Google's Chrome web browser on Windows, OS X, iOS and Android before version 4.4 KitKat (Chrome only used WebCore, and also incorporated its own JavaScript engine called V8 and a multi-process system).[39] Other applications on OS X make use of WebKit, such as Apple's e-mail client Mail and the 2008 version of Microsoft's Entourage personal information manager, both of which make use of WebKit to render e-mail messages with HTML content."

I am participating here for the love of it.

For most of us here, this is an activity before, in between and after the main thing in life.

Apple releases updates with bug fixes and asks us to keep the macOS updated.

As I stated earlier webkit engine is the underlying technology behind Safari, Mail, App Store, iTunes, etc.

These applications are interconnected and are part of OS X.

There are various reasons behind this “WebContent quit unexpectedly” issue.

In my first post here, I did ask for an EtreCheck report.

That report will show the version of macOS and Safari.

It will also show third party extensions, plug-ins and other third party applications that can interfere

with Safari.

After seeing the report, one can suggest solutions,if possible.
